Hello,
I noticed about 3 months ago (we dont watch tv that often) that all of a sudden there was a purple and bright green wave going across the top of the television. I turned on the tv today to listen to one of those digital cable radio stations while working in the living room and all of a sudden the purple and green streaks were gone. The tv picture was fine for awhile and then all of a sudden the streaks just popped back on. The only other electronics equipment that I have by the big screen is an xbox, nintendo wii and I just recently brought my little 19 inch tv out by it too. Is there something that I can do to fix this myself or am I going to have to take into a repair shop? Thanks for the help!

Hello,
This television set, as well as most rear-projections, is prone to convergence driver problems. There are two large chips (STK392-110's) in the TV that need to be replaced, as well as some resistors that are likely damaged as well. Any competent TV repair shops should be able to repair this TV for 200-300 dollars. It is important to note that if the back of the TV is taken off without the proper prep., the Digital input (DVI) will be disabled permanently.
Hope this helps you...

Common problems with the chassis used in this model for complaints such as this are caused by damage in the convergence circuitry (since there are three separate picture tubes, each mounted in a physical location different from the others, the light each tube "throws" on the screen falls in a different physical location on the screen; the electronics of the convergence circutry force the red & blue light information to "converge" on the image produced by the green tube, which being physically located in the center of the other two is the "master" image), usually associated with the IC's used as amplifiers for the convergence circuits (this model uses STK392-110's) and with the high-wattage, low ohmage resistors used as biasing components for these amps

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.
Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )
Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
Here is a quick test....
Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.
Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.
You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.
If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.
Solution #1
You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.
Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy
Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Solution #2
What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc
