I was using the unit with no problems this morning and the batteries were running low, so I put in fresh batteries. When I turned the unit back on it wouldn't acquire satellites. I left it for a few hours and tried again - no satellites. I put in the old batteries and it still won't acquire satellites.
after days still not acquireing satellites
Update/Reload your unit's GPS and sytem software via Garmin page or use Web Updater. Your unit will be functioning again. This problem also occurs if you leave your unit on a dash board in a car and it is exposed to hight temperature.

yes it can be very much possible that the gps device is not getting satellite signals due to older version of map.update the gps device with its latest firmware updates for maps then check out.also other possible reasons for this problems are are inbuilt antenna in the gps device is got weak there are external gps antenna available in the online sites like radio-shack and best-buy shops.but if the antenna is not the problem then it can be problem in the battery of the gps.the battery is got weak.the battery needs replacement in this case.but if the battery is also not the problem then check out if the no or low signal problem is only at one place or every where.if there are tall buildings and trees covering the gps or its in the packed room or car.then it looses signals sometimes..in this case it has to be placed directly facing towards the open sky.where the space is wide open then check out.it will start catching the signal.but as per you question if nothing helps then yes the older map version in the device is definitely one of the reason for no signal in the device.
this will help.please do rate the solution.keep updated for any further assistance if more help required.thanks.
3 things and 1 is serious Not a clear view of the sky... Batteries are too low to read a satellite signal fully charge the unit The SIIRF chip is damaged.. Expensiive!
If you put it into car power and start engine it will damage the unit and one day you will turn it off and then on and it will never work again
I feel like a dummy. It turned out the battery was bad only 2.7v.
The replacement I first used was previously used.
Got a new one and all is well.
Found that the unit must have a battery that is fresh. A slightly low battery will not work.
I even put the "low" battery in another unit and it worked.
This is taken from the Nextar Support Web Site;
" Q: NOTICE for all US customers with M3 and Q4 series that have been having a problem recently with receiving a satellite signal.
A: Recently it has come to our attention that there has been a problem with a US GPS satellite, in the early morning of June 14 launch a sudden change in the code signal, leading to some GPS signal anomalies. It is told that the satellite signal should be running properly by June 22, 2009.
Accordingto Garmin, this problem can be fixed by disabling the WAAS feature in teh set up menu. There is an incompatibility between the old Garmin software and latest WAAS upgrades. Later software from Garmin is supposed to fix this problem.
How "fresh" are the batteries. Quite often they are weak, right out of the package. We revive a lot of "dead" cameras with Energizer Lithium AA batteries. Many cameras that people are ready to write-off, are resurrected with the Energizer Lithiums. I also think that battery manufacturers are not putting as much "juice" in them as they used to.
Have you tried channel 3 or the video input channels.
The Tv only needs the one channel that the signal from the box is sent on.
All the viewing channels will be changed through the satellite box.
I have run into the same problem and it may be related to the WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) feature. Try disabling this feature (under MAIN MENU / Setup). I used this receiver overseas (Asia and Europe) last year for 35 days straight with no problems. During this time WAAS was disabled as none of these satellites are visible overseas. The problem occurred intermittently prior to the overseas trip, and has reoccurred after returning. I was running into the same problem this past weekend and noticed the screen blanking out (with the vertical line) shortly after differential corrections were applied to the GPS signals. I disabled the WAAS and let the receiver run for over an hour. The problem did not return. Hope this helps.
You need to connect TomTom to a computer and run their 'TomTom Home' program. Let it check for updates. It will download a file called "QuickGPSfix data". This file updates your TomTom with the latest satellite positions and ensures your TomTom will find its coordinates very quickly after switching on. A new file can be downloaded at least once a week. Generally, the longer you left it since downloading this file, the longer it will take to find its coordinates (ie. find a signal).
I am running into the same exact issue. I have had my Sportster about 14 months now and this is the first problem I've encountered.
We had a cold night in the low 20s and the next morning the Sportster started in with these issues. It's been two weeks now and I have the same exact issues (have power, all connections in tact, no "no signal" message, etc.).
Sirius recommended a factory reset through the menu option. I was able to do that, but the problem was not corrected.
If anyone has any advice here, please let us know.....
Thank you.
