I would replace the 32 year old opener with a new state of the art model. If that isn't an option you can take a look at the Sears universal remote control replacement kit.
Sounds like the trolley is stopped up against the stop bolt on the rail. This comes from bad limits. This happens often on older Chamberlain/Sears/Liftmaster etc openers.
If you are sure the battery is good then try to program the remote by holding the button down on the remote and then pressing and immediately releasing the smart/learn button. If this doesn't work and you have another remote that does work then the remote has quit working.
wow nutone is a dying bred but what you have is a outside radio meaning that its a sear set up to your opener you should be able to take your remote down to sears and they can match it up for you.
