Olympus e510 hot-shoe doesn't respond...

Hi,
few days ago i've noticed that my flash unit fl-50 won't trigger when attached to Olympus e510 dslr camera...

i think that the problem is with camera's hot-shoe slot because the flash triggers off the camera with the wireless transmitter test button (and, of course, reciever attached on the flash)

the flash unit sits perfectly in the hot-shoe of the camera, but for some reason doesn't recieve the shutter information from the camera

thnx for your help,

sincerely

D.

I have the same prob with my olympus evolt 5 series digital cam. As it sits right now the pop up flash is released and readied for action whenever I attach the flash unit to the hot shoe. The hot shoe came completely off last week. I tried re setting with super glue but I still have to tilt the flash in strange directions once it is attached in order to get it to fire. Most times it doesn't and the built in flash just reacts as if I don't have another unit attached. I think that the hot shoe's connection to the camera info center is completely severed. Help!

Sadly I think the problem is a design fault. Simply put the pins don't align accurately when you slide the flash unit on and lock it into position. There is slight misalignment, even though the locking pin has slipped into the slot.

I have had an absolute nightmare with the hot shoe on my E-510, and it took me ages to figure out what the problem was, having cleaned the contacts to within an inch of their lives!.

When you slide the flash on and lock it the pins don't connect accurately with the plates on the hot shoe plate. The only way I can get the **** thing to communicate with a flash unit or flash extension cable is to slide it on, partialy lock it and start gently wiggling the flash unit backwards and forwards until the flash icon on the menu screen lights up, then quickly finish the locking procedure.

Even that, though, doesn't guarantee consistent communication with the camera. Swinging the camera up and down between shots often jiggles the contacts out of alignment again and suddenly the flash won't fire again, neccesitating a repeat of the whole wiggle method. Often I have to turn camera and flash off and reboot everything again because once the camera loses communication it won't talk to the flash even when it's correctly realigned. It's either bad design or poor manufacture, but whatever it is it's a huge nuisance.

Have you tried cleaning the hot shoe contact? If the contact is dirty it may not communicate with the camera. The "contact" Its the metal "circle" in the middle of the hot shoe. Using a pencil eraser, rub the contact gently until you create eraser crumbs, then gently rub the "circle" with a soft cloth. See if this fixes it.

How do you synchronize a non olympus flash unit to an olympus e 500

Install flash on hot shoe and use shutter speed on camera set to no faster than 1/125. Read the owners manul for flash AND camera. Be careful, some trigger voltages may be higher than what your cdamera can handle and may ruin internal flash usage, if not camera itself. better to use a Wein Safesynch hot shoe. This mounts ion hotshoe of camera and flash is attached to this.

Hot shoe

If the flash is not sitting securely on the hot shoe when attached to the camera you may want to send the camera body to Olympus repair center for service. Their telephone number is 800-622-6372 option 2 and then option 3 to discuss the repair process and pricing if needed.

Olympus FL36 flash unit

Hey I have an E510 and an fl 36 flash unit and no problems for a year now.
And no problems at all {knock wood]!
Have you checked to see if all the flash pins are making contact?
Normally I only turn my flash on after I put it on the camera and then turn the camera off and then on again to see if everything is ok. I remember the flash would not communicate with the camera on a shoot and after a while I realized that the flash was not all the way in the hot shoe. Fool around with the flash off the camera first and see. The flash have modes that you have to set up if the mode is set in full manual that might be a problem. There is a button that you have to hold down for three seconds to get in the menu, Get hold of your manual or download one My buttons are fine and have not faded any at all. I realize that the power button an the flash is hard to press on, I do hope I was of help .GOOD LUCK
