I was watching my Toshiba 56mx195 DLP tv and heard a popping noise and the screen went blank but the sound was still on, is it the lamp or something worse?

You are correct in this assumption it is more than likely the lamp that blew after too many hours or getting to hot.

i suggest checking the lamp. find you owners manual and go through the steps to "replace the lamp" if it is popped and you can see little pieces moving around inside than contact toshiba and they will send you a replacement with credit card numbers of course.

You need to replace the lamp in this set. The "pop" you heard was the lamp popping.

Sounds like it blew an "Internal Fuse"
if you want to fix it..simply open rear of TV and look for the fuse.
here is link for a manual if you do not have one.

I heard a popping sound and the tv screen went blank. Can you help?

The noise you've heard is more likely from the bulb blowing up. I would suggest to remove the lamp and visually inspect it.
Have you replaced the lamp on this DLP before?
Download the user's guide from this link and see page # 24 and 25 for more info about the lamp part number and how to replace it.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

TV will not power on.

I guess your TV is DLP.
Please notice the follow symthoms:
When you on TV, did you hear some strange noise from the back of the TV. If yes, the color wheel needs replacing.
If no, check the lamp. Take a look to bottom of lamp, you will see white pot or sometime a pop up there due to lamp cycle is going to end. When changing lamp, check the ballast and power sup, too. If you see caps are poping up. Pull out those board and replace the poped caps.

Tv went out after loud pop and has clicking noise does not turn on

If you have a Sony DLP, then the loud pop you heard is your lamp.  The lamps last approx. 4K-6K viewing hours.  Read your manual for replacement part number to reorder and very simple to replace yourself.

HEARD LOUD POP NOISE DLP TV DOES NOT WORK

Following up on my Feb 7 post. My new lamp arrived, and I replaced it and it works great. The old lamp had many shards of glass come out of it. It was tore up. I saved some money buy purchasing just the lamp and not the cartridge. It's a little bit more work to take apart, but saves money. Mitsubishi wanted $289 for the lamp replacement kit. I got a lamp for $114. TV is working just fine now!
