There is what is called a "dew sensor" in a lot of vcr's that keep you from playing a tape if it senses moisture in the unit because a tape will stick to the video head and get all bunged up. sometimes they go bad and will keep you from playing a tape even when there is no moisture present. if your are electronically inclined you can take the back off and locate the dew sensor, then disconnect it. the constant whirring noise is the unit's way of trying to dry off the video head cylinder. the dew sensor, which is usally located behind the video head, is a dark grey thing about a half inch by half inch and has two wires going to it.

VCR has no color picture is clear but black and white

Vee, V, a Vee Cee Rrrrr ? Not a DVD?

If you are playing a VHS tape that should be color content and it's in Black and White ... well you could check the tracking control if there is one on that model. Otherwise it sounds pretty broken. Probably NWR. Not worth repair. Try Cleaning the heads with a cleaning tape???

Sansui DVD/VCR remote control issue, VCR works/DVD does not-black

There should be a DVD/VCR button on the remote control which will toggle the machine from one playback source to another. If she has pressed the VCR button then the machine will only playback tapes & not show DVD's. Press this button & the DVD's should play. If you look closely at the front window of the machine it will show what mode it is in ie VCR or DVD, set this for the DVD to get it to play.

Tape stuck in VCR

could be that you're looking at a blown cartridge for that vcr tape. You may need to cut the tape, to extract that from the unit.

The play head would usually retract when the cartridge is removed, BUT could be compromised by some tape getting into the play head mechanism, and jamming.

be particularly careful with anything pointy or sharp, as the tape head does NOT like those objects near the read surface.

VCR plays tape with only sound and some channels seem deleted.

Needs the vcr heads cleaned, and get a universal remote with a menu button to change the tuner setup.

VCR repeatedly tries to play and eject when tape deck is empty

the tape carriage is probably stuck, or something stuck inside blocking the tape sensor.
feed a tape in and see if it does it "with" the tape too

hope this helps
