Best buy guy says buy new computer because if sound card is bad, I must replace mother board + labor. which he says new purchase of new computer is best route.
Is this true?
It's true that with a laptop, replacing some parts means replacing the motherboard as they are integrated parts, this applies with the sound card. If your laptop is under warranty then you should be able to get it fixed, otherwise you need to weight the cost of replacing the motherboard verses buying a new computer. Seeing as how the motherboard in a laptop is pretty much half the computer, it may be cheaper to buy a new one.
There are such things as external sound cards, do a search for external sound card or USB sound card and you should find some. The difference here is that you will plug your speakers or headphones into that instead of the laptop. Here is a link to get you started:
