Brother MFC 240C All-In-One InkJet Printer Logo
Posted on Mar 13, 2009

Brother's printer has ink cartridge problems.

Brother's MFC-240C all-in-one shows that no ink, change cartridges and not working, so I changed with new ones and is working now, but when I check the ink cartridges almost half of cartridges are filled with ink.
If it designed in this way, it should be fixed, because it is wasting earth's valuble resorces.

SOURCE: Over-ride out of ink message Brother MFC-240C

Yes, you can cut a small piece of electrical tape and place it over the window on the inside edge of the cartridge. it has to wrap around the window tightly.

SOURCE: MFC-240C PRINTER DISPLAYS "INIT UNABLE 4F" WHEN TURN ON

Hi there
With some Brother printers you can try this.

Access the internal maintenance mode by pressing the Menu/Set button, then press * 2 8 6 4 within 2 seconds. This should put you in the maintenance mode menu. Enter 80, and then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.

This will reset the purge count value. Then the printer will restart, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.

Some times this happens because of using cheap compatible ink cartridges if this is the case change the ink cartridges.

Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

How to change an ink cartridge on the Brother MFC-240C

The Brother MFC-240C uses an individual cartridge for each color (black, yellow, cyan, and magenta). When one of the colors is out of ink, the printer will tell you to replace the ink cartridge. To replace a cartridge, follow the steps below.

All four cartridges are located on the right front side of the printer, behind a cover. Pull the cover forward from the side, where there is a slight cutout for you to grab. When the cover falls forward, you'll see the ink cartridge holders.

For whichever ink cartridge you are replacing, push down on the purple handle for that color. The ink cartridge holder will open and fall forward, revealing the ink cartridge itself. Push down on the cartridge holder and the cartridge should pop toward you a little bit. Grasp the cartridge and remove it.

Open the new cartridge and remove it from its wrapper. Discard the yellow cover, unless you plan to use it for the old cartridge.

Insert the new cartridge into the correct slot (from left to right: black, yellow, cyan, magenta) so that the word "brother" is right-side up and located toward the top of the cartridge. Once it is most of the way in, push the ink cartridge holder up by the purple handle until it snaps into place. Then close the ink cartridge cover.

If you were out of ink, the machine should recognize the new cartridge and perform its calibration. If it doesn't automatically recognize it, it will ask if you have changed one or more of the cartridges. Press "1" for Yes.

Once you have printed a test page with all four colors to verify that everything is working, either discard the old cartridge in the trash or save it to recycle. But don't get rid of it until you are sure the new cartridge is recognized and working.

I have a Brother MFC 240C printer that will not print black ink. I just changed all the cartridges. All the other cartridges print. I ran the clean cycle many times. No error messages just blank paper.

I have a brother MFC 3240C. My Black ink stopped printing(initially printed horizontal faded lines and gradually got worse), the other colors were printing fine. I tried cleaning numerous time( 50 -100 times over 1-2 weeks ). Still no improvement. The way I print now is:
1. I go to Printer Properties
2. Change Media type from "Plain Paper" to "Inkjet Paper".
3. Change Quality to "Photo".

This takes a long time to print 1-2 minutes per page. However, this works for me since this is my Home printer and use it for printing only few pages here are there.

Good Luck

Not recognizing ink cartridge

On the clear side of the cartridge, put a piece of electrical tape to cover the center plastic bar that sticks out. For some reason these printers have a big problem with sensing ink levels. The tape lets the sensor think the cartridge float inside is up, meaning a full cartridge. The sensors seem to have difficulty reading where the black float is inside the cartridge.

Replacing the cart holder on a Brother MFC 240C

Somethings that have worked for some Brother owners to get cartridges recognised.

1. With your MFC powered up, open it up and remove the cartridge you are having a problem with, then close the MFC, leaving it powered up. It should report that there is no cartridge in the machine.

Still with the MFC powered up, open it up and reinsert the ink cartridge, then close the MFC. It should either ask if you have replaced a cartridge or go into its cleaning mode.

Answer "yes" to "have you replaced cartridge?" and it should either "print" or "clean" and then "print".

2. The cartridge holder in the printer has an "electronic eye" (light sensor) of some type for each cartridge.
Some users have found that putting either permanent marker/sharpie/black PVC tape either on the area of the ink cartridge that goes near the sensor or alternatively putting tape over the sensor itself allows printing to occur.
The problem with this method is that the printer will no longer recognise near-empty cartridges and so will not warn you to replace them and so the print head may be damaged. This is said to work on LC57 icartridges used with the following models: DCP-330C, DCP-350C, DCP-540CN, DCP-560CN, FAX-2480C, MFC-240C, MFC-440CN, MFC-465CN, MFC-665CW, MFC-685CW, MFC-885CW, MFC-3360C, MFC-5460CN, MFC-5860CN.
