A shunt is always energized and it has a purpose. The purpose is to bypass some of the load from the main circuit. It would be tripping due to overload

The black wire goes to the off switch. When the switch is off, stopping the engine, the black wire is ground. When the engine is running, the black wire is floating.

The instrument cluster illuminates the interior lamps when an unlock signal is received from the vehicle security module. The illuminated entry feature will be canceled when any of the following conditions are met:
  • 25 seconds have elapsed since the illuminated entry feature was activated and the interior lamp control is not activated (door ajar or courtesy lamp switch on).
  • The instrument cluster receives a request from the vehicle security module (remote transmitter lock button pressed) and the interior lamp control is not activated.
  • The ignition is in the RUN or START position and the interior lamp control is not activated.
The instrument cluster illuminates the courtesy lamps when any door is open or ajar. The courtesy lamps shuts off when the doors are closed and the illuminated entry feature is not active or when the vehicle speed is greater than 5 mph (8 km/h). The interior lamps are not reactivated until the vehicle speed is less than 3 mph (5 km/h) and a new door open warning lamp signal is received.
The instrument cluster controls the courtesy lamps illuminated entry function by activating the battery saver relay.
The panel dimmer switch is integrated into the headlamp switch and controls the interior lamps by activating the instrument cluster through circuit 1034 (BK/WH).
The vehicle security module sends a signal to the instrument cluster on the UBP network circuit to indicate a request to turn the illuminated entry feature on or off.
The on-demand lamps, glove compartment assembly, homelink module, puddle lamps and illuminated vanity mirrors are controlled by the battery saver relay. The battery saver relay becomes active (relay coil is energized) when the instrument is in the awake mode, or in the sleep mode (relay coil is de-energized).

Engine cold. Start engine reading says engine hot ac off. Fans run all time.

Are the fans running on low or high ?
Circuit/System Description
The engine control module (ECM) commands the fans ON in either high speed or low speed, depending on cooling requirements. In low speed, both fans are turned ON at a reduced speed. High speed has both fans turned ON at full speed.
In low speed operation, the ECM applies ground to the coil side of the fan low relay. This energizes the coil and applies voltage directly to the left cooling fan through the switch side of the fan low relay, which is fed by the fan 1 fuse. The right fan is connected in series to the left fan through the de-energized fan control relay so that both operate at low speed.
In high speed operation, the ECM applies a ground to the coil side of the fan low relay, the fan control relay , and the fan high relay. On the fan high relay, the energized coil closes the switch side of the relay and applies voltage directly to the right cooling fan through the switch side of the relay, which is fed by the fan 2 fuse. At the same time, the ECM energizes fan control relay pulling the switch side over, providing a direct path to ground for the left cooling fan, which has voltage applied through the energized fan low relay. In high speed mode, the fans are operated as a parallel circuit with full voltage applied to each.
You should have it hooked up to a scan tool that can read engine sensor data parameters . Check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes etc...
Circuit/System Verification
  1. If DTCs P0480 or P0481 are set, perform those diagnostics first.
  2. Ignition ON, verify with a scan tool that the control module is not commanding fan activation.
  3. Ignition ON, observe that the fans are not activated.
Your best bet is to take it to a ASE certified repair shop !

What voltage and amperage is required to trip a shunt trip unit

The circuit breaker will have a shunt trip voltage & current ratings, a variable current selector knob, etc. - based on the type breaker (Catelog number). Here is a link to images of C-H shunt trip devices and circuit breakers

The magnetron probably has a partial short pulling more current than normal as it runs, the other two items that give trouble is the high voltage diode, "sometimes cracks" to the high voltage capacitor, "usually shorts"

I have a square D breaker with shunt trip. The breaker keeps tripping so how do I check the breaker?

A shunt trip breaker operation.

It works just like a normal circuit breaker with one additional function. A shunt-trip breaker also has a built-in magnetic coil that can be energized externally to trip the breaker.


So what is wired to the shunt that is not letting the breaker reset?

Have just installed a 1P 20-QOB shunt trip breaker in the panel. Landed the 120 v circuit back on the breaker ...have a hot(common) from the relay and a return leg ....just not sure if i put the common...

Treat the shunt trip as if it were a switch. The neutral (usually white wire) on the shunt trip connects to the neutral busbar. The other (usually black) wire is the "switched leg", so to speak. The hot that goes out to the relay comes off a _separate_ breaker. The return from the relay connects to the black "switched leg" on the shunt tip. Most shunt trips have 2 wires coming off the shunt trip, a white and a black. If your breaker has contacts instead of wires coming off the shunt trip, the concept is still the same.

Check engine light on..code short runner valve control malfuction

P1004 - SHORT RUNNER VALVE CONTROL PERFORMANCE

Sound like something came loose. If you cannot find it you need to take it to the dealer so they can perform these diagnostics. Should be under warranty.

The engine performance and power output is enhanced through the use of the "short runner valve" (SRV) system. The SRV system allows the intake charge air to bypass the long intake manifold runners between the intake manifold plenum and the intake manifold interface to the cylinder heads by providing a shorter runner directly between the plenum and the cylinder head interface.

The SRV position is controlled by a pneumatic/spring actuator and electronic solenoid valve. When the solenoid is not energized (the "rest" position), the SRV is held in the closed position. When the solenoid is energized the SRV is moved and held in its opened position. There is a set of enable conditions including a minimum engine coolant and ambient temperature, SRV enable, and Powertrain Coordinator load enable condition. If any of these conditions are not met, then the SRV valve is de-energized (closed).

* When Monitored: With the engine run time above a calibrated value, battery voltage greater than 10.4 volts, ECT within a specific range, and the Short Runner Valve Assembly (SRV) control active.
* Set Condition: The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) compares the circuit feedback to a calibrated closed range, between 75% & 85% Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) duty cycle, when the circuit is de-energized or to a calibrated open range, between 35% & 55% PWM duty cycle, when the circuit is energized. If the value is determined to be out of the calibrated range in either the de-energized, greater than 85% duty cycle or less than 75% duty cycle, or energized, greater than 55% duty cycle or less than 35% duty cycle, state for more than a calibrated amount of time, this DTC will set.

Door panel lights wont turn off

push the door switches in by hand and see if the lights go out. Here's some diagnostic info:

Vehicles may be equipped with either a generic electronic module (GEM) or a central timer module (CTM) depending on vehicle options.
  • Vehicles with 4-wheel drive or the power group option will be equipped with a GEM.
  • Vehicles with 2-wheel drive and no power group option will be equipped with a CTM.
Courtesy Lamps The GEM and the CTM illuminate the interior lamps when any door is open or ajar. The interior lamps are: the interior lamp, the cargo lamp and the door courtesy lamp. The courtesy lamps will shut off when:
  • The doors are closed and the illuminated entry (GEM only) feature is not active.
  • The vehicle speed is greater than 15 mph (24 km/h). The interior lamps will not be reactivated until the vehicle speed is less than 10 mph (16 km/h) and a new door open warning lamp switch signal is received (GEM only).
The system inputs to the GEM/CTM are as follows:
  • The door open warning lamp switches. (Grounded when door is ajar; an open circuit when the door is closed.)
  • The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) input. (Sinusoid Wave: 0.7V-20V, 2.2 Hz/MPH [1.37 Hz/km/h] [GEM only].)
The system output to the GEM/CTM is as follows:
  • The interior lamp relay coil output. (Grounded when activated; open circuit when deactivated.)
Interior Lamp Relay The GEM and the CTM control the interior lamps and illuminated entry function with the interior lamp relay.
The relay is activated by applying ground to the relay coil through GEM C267-15, and is deactivated by removing the ground signal.
Panel Dimmer Switch The panel dimmer switch is integrated into the headlamp switch and controls the interior lamps by activating the interior lamp relay.
Illuminated Entry (GEM Only) The GEM illuminates the interior lamps when an unlock signal is received from the remote anti-theft personality (RAP) module. The illuminated entry feature will be canceled when any of the following conditions are met:
  • 25 seconds have elapsed since the illuminated entry feature was activated and the courtesy lamp feature is not activated.
  • The GEM receives a request from the RAP module (remote transmitter lock button pressed) and the courtesy lamp feature is not activated.
  • The ignition is in the RUN or START position and the courtesy lamp feature is not activated.
The illuminated entry inputs are:
  • RAP illuminated entry request. (Grounded pulse of varying length.)
  • Ignition switch in the RUN position. (Battery voltage on both the RUN and RUN/ACC inputs.)
The illuminated entry outputs are:
  • Interior lamp relay coil output. (Grounded when activated; an open circuit when deactivated.)
RAP Module The RAP module sends a signal to the GEM on the illuminated entry request circuit to indicate a request to turn the illuminated entry feature on or off. Circuit 1013 (BR/LG) is normally sent 12 volts by the GEM. The RAP module shorts this circuit to ground with a pulse of either of the following lengths:
  • 200 ms pulse from RAP receiver assembly requests illuminated entry ON (unlock button pressed).
  • 300 ms pulse from RAP receiver assembly requests illuminated entry OFF (lock button pressed).
GEM Sleep Mode The GEM and the CTM sleep mode deactivate all outputs to conserve battery power. Sleep mode is entered when the ignition has not entered the RUN or ACC position and 45 minutes has elapsed since the last wake-up input was received. In this mode, GEM current consumption is reduced to 5.0 mA or less. During sleep mode the GEM monitors the following wake-up inputs:
  • Both front door open warning lamp switches.
  • Ignition switch in the key-in, ACC and RUN position.
  • RAP illuminated entry request.
The GEM sleep mode outputs are:
  • None. (All circuits are deactivated during sleep mode.)
If a change in any of the above inputs occur while the GEM is asleep, the GEM will wake up and monitor all of its inputs and have the ability to activate any of its outputs.
The following components are under the control of the battery saver relay:
  • Interior lamp.
  • Engine compartment lamp.
  • Glove compartment lamp.
  • Panel dimmer switch.
  • Interior lamp relay.
The battery saver relay becomes active (relay coil is energized) when the GEM is in the awake mode, and is deactivated (relay coil is de-energized) in the sleep mode. The battery saver will remain active until the ignition switch is removed from the ACC or RUN position and 45 minutes have passed since the last active input was received (see sleep mode inputs). At that time, the relay will be deactivated and power to the above circuits will terminate.
The battery saver inputs are the GEM sleep mode inputs.
The battery saver output is the battery saver relay.
Inspection and Verification — GEM/CTM
  1. The interior lighting system is a generic electronic module (GEM)/central timer module (CTM) controlled system. Refer to Section 419-10 for additional information regarding GEM/CTM diagnostic strategies.
  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the interior lamps.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.

  1. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel, and select the vehicle to be tested from the NGS menu. If the NGS does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • check the connections to the vehicle.
    • check the ignition switch position.
