Guest, you got it right but this is typically not a problem on whirlpools now because the drain exits at a higher level. however if its the older with drian exit at bottom then definately make sure it goes up then down to avoid gravity drain.
adjusting the dial to fix indicates a potential timer issue. is the drain pump running (spinning) while filling?

I have a similar problem, I moved my washing machine to a differnet location and therefore changed the drain function. A friend told me you need to make sure your hose (the drain hose from the machine) goes above the washing machine before entering the sink (or if it goes straight to the drain).
So basically you can't just run the hose from the bottom of the washer in to a drain, it must first travel up and then back down. Makes sense once I took the time to think about it.
not sure if this is your problem...but maybe something to consider
