I just bought the CX 300 from Buy.com. I plugged them into my IPOD and there is no bass sound... only high treble... and you have to crank up the volume to hear. Is this a defective pair or is there some setting that can be changed? thank you!
You might want to try using a different size of the earpieces that come with it, and make sure they're inserted fully into your ear. They come with three different size earpieces because people's ears are shaped differently, and having the right size can make a HUGE difference in the sound. If it's done right, it should basically feel like you've just inserted an earplug into your ear.
If that doesn't help, and you've tried another pair of headphones to verify that it's not a problem with your sound source, I would guess you were unlucky enough to get a defective pair.

I bought a set today and there was very little bass and a very high treble sound. I bought them to replace a cheap $20 Sony set that I had got paint on. Tonight I compared the $20 Sony earphones with the Sennheiser CX 300 with the same song. The Sony sounded heaps better with lots more bass. I will be taking my set back to the shop I bought them from.
Thanks for your comments Lachrymosa. A couple of additional comments. It depends how you use your ear phones. The sound is great if you are not walking and you can put your fingers up to cover the ear phones in your ears. However when walking I found that even with the earphones fully in, the bass is fairly low. (I do not walk with my fingers in my ears!) Having a hard shell set of earphones seems to help hear the bass sound better, especially when walking, which is when I mostly use my earphones. Do others find this to be so?
