With the back off of the set it will shut off. There is a lever it engages to prevent the set being operated with the back off.
The color Wheel will cause a fan like or high pitched grinding noise. I can tell you where to buy it and also there are on the internet places with written and VIDEO instructions for the replacement in most of these sets.
Put the back on and see if the set again works and still has the noise.

I had this problem on my 42" Philips. Just got it yesterday and worked fine on the tv stand. As soon as I mounted the TV to the wall via wall mount system, I had the exact same issue you did. Figured it out today.
The wall mount was putting pressure against the center of the back of the tv (tv set had a slightly rounded back plate, and the mount was a flat plate). As soon as I put spacers (part of the wall mount hardware set) between the wall mount braket and the tv so there was no contact except at the mounting holes, the tv worked fine.
My theory is the pressure pushed the tv back plate against some board components which caused them to overheat (no air flow); or put pressure on internal connectors. I dont know.
I had a problem that has not been fixed that i had put glass cleaner on my tv and every time i turn it off it comes back on sooo i do not have a solution so i need more and cheap ways to fix my tv.
SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A BAD LCD PANEL. THE LAMP DETECTION CIRCUIT IS SEEING A BAD LAMP OR DRIVE TRANSFORMER AND IS SENDING A SIGNAL TO SHUT THE PANEL OFF. NOT WORTH MESSING WITH PANEL WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED
This sounds like a mainboard problem. Unless you do not see a back light flash when you turn on the TV, which may mean it is an inverter board problem, this is most likely fixable by replacing the mainboard.
