Hi, I have a Dell XPS M1210 notebook. Initially, I couldn't log on when prompted for my password. I hadn't forgotten my password, the screen says that the user profile service failed the logon. Then I thought that I had changed the password in F2 (setup) but had added an administrator password that will let me get to the screen that originally asked me for my password but I can not re-enter setup mode. Any ideas?
This is a known vista issue where it creates a backup of your profile for some reason there registry edits to try and fix it but a system restore is much easier. Follow the below steps to solve problem.
Turned computer on and immediately pressed F8 repeatedly until I got "Advanced Boot Options" select "Safe Mode" computer then opens safe mode login as admin if possible, with a "Help" window, in the help window there is an underlined "What is System Restore?" then select "Click to open System Restore" restore to a previous state before which the fault occurred.
Click OK and after config changes should be good to go.
