Large Black Box Showing up in middle of screen.

Out of the blue a large black box shows up in the middle of the screen. It is a perfect rectangle and takes up about 80% of the screen. When you move the volume button or change a channel it goes away but comes right back. Used to be able to get to HD channels and it would not happen, now it happens on all channels regardless of the input, DVD, Cable box, direct cable.

I have read everywhere that the black square box in my tv is due to closed captions, and i should disable it in order to get rid of such square.

I want to be able to use close caption!!! is there a way to have closed captions without that square?

My tv is hooked up to the cable boc via composite video so the closed captions setting are in the cable box since my tv disables closed caption when using composite input.

need help ASAP i've tried everything

We have a 57UWX20B manufactured Nov 2002. The black box centered on screen problem was random, and rare, with Comcast as a provider. The box would suddenly appear for now apparent reason. Changing the volume made the box go away for about 15 seconds. This would last a day or so and then the problem would go away for weeks. We just switched to AT&T U-verse service and now the box is constant -- we can't WATCH our TV! Changing the volume solves the problem for just a few seconds. A second TV (different manufacturer and the old 'tube' kind) works fine so it isn't the provider.

For us it was the closed captioning. Took it off & box disappeared. Thanks!

When a black box appears on the screen it means that your closed captions are on and set to TEXT. When the closed captions are set to CC1, it puts the words on the screen and when set to TEXT it puts a black box in the center of the screen. Go into the set's menu, navigate to the closed captions page and set the captions to OFF.

Thank you so much for your help! That black box always appears on the screen when my dad watches TV. I was about to call my dish to get the problem solved, but I decided to first look it up online. In seconds, I understood the problem and fixed it. Once again, thanks.

Finally the BLACK BOX OF AGONY is GONE!!!! Thank you for the advice! At first I thought it was our cable provider that was making these caption BOX show up... then after reading the forum I realized it was the TV itself and not our provider. Thank you.

SOURCE: Can't get rid of black box

You have your TV in the "Teletext" mode. Go into the TV menu and select the closed-captioning menu and turn off the text function. What you are seeing is the result of the TV's captioning circuit latching onto a false text pilot signal and then throwing up the black box on the screen.

My 32 lcd tv a black rectangle apears on aprox,

If it is a large black rectangle that blots out the middle of the screen then you need to check your CC (closed caption) setting. Make sure the closed caption is turned off. I'm not up to date on the newer sets, but a lot of the older ones had more than one CC setting. One setting ran the captioning across the bottom, another put it in a big black box in the center of the screen. Most places didn't support the full text so all that showed was a big black rectangle on the screen. Since I'm not sure exactly what your rectangle looks like, this is my best estimate of your problem. Hope this helps.

Black box in middle of tv screen

This is a background for text, even though you aren't seeing any text at the time. Since it covers most of the screen, it sounds more like a demo mode screen than closed captioning. Go into your setup menu and make sure that neither of those is selected. If necessary, restore the factory settings. I'm assuming that this is coming from the tv itself, and that you don't have a VCR, Tivo, etc. Good luck!

Large dot in the middle of the projected display

there is a burned-in spot on the polerizer light filter for the blue lcd. it makes sure the light is blue coming through, that's why it is black on a blue screen, and yellow when the red and green are the only light showing through. it needs to be replaced. pat # PFiLW0213CEZZ.

You have inadvertently activated one of the closed-caption modes called T1 or Text 1. Find out how to turn the closed-captioning off and on and you'll be able to turn this off.

Black box in middle of screen

Note that the large black box goes away when pushing buttons on the tv (ex: the black box will disappear to show the volume setting when changing the volume on the tv but it will cover the picture and the menu display of the dtv box).

This is caused by the closed caption setting of the television set NOT the captioning of the converter box. To fix this you must open your television's menu, find the ccd/closed caption option, and turn it off. This is a frustrating problem as when most people are told to shut off the captioning they try to do so at the box.

Normal dtv box captioning will appear as a small text box at the bottom of the screen as you would expect - not as a giant black rectangle that covers most of the screen. If you do want to shut this off too you will find that you can't do it through the usual menu options (the menu will only allow changes to font, color etc.) - there should be a ccd button on the remote that when pushed will scroll through ccd-1, ccd-2,... off.

Black screen

I have a Sharp Tv that had the same problem with a large brownish or black square right in the middle of the screen. It only left about an inch around the edges that you
could see the picture moving in behind the big black block or square.I have DISH sat-elite and the book recomending that I check and see if the "caption settings" were on
or off. They were on. I turned the caption settings off and the large square diappeared.
