Hi, There are 2 problems at present. When recording an image, the zooming mechanism (the button that indicates: "T - W")zooms into the image very slowly. How do you stop it from zooming in when recording? The playback icon symbol shows in the viewing screen and playback starts happening when pressing the rewind button. The stop, pause, fast forward buttons are non fuctional when this occurs. The only way to stop the playback is pushing the eject button or turning off the power button. Rewinding a tape is not fuctional at all. The zoom button still operates when recording but is stuck slowly zooming in all the time. Pressing in the Play button will not start playback but pressing in the Rewind button will start playback. Power off or eject to stop playback. Pressing the Pause button will start playback. Power off or eject to stop playback. The Zoom, Rewind and Pause buttons are all that are functional in Player mode operating as described. Recording "seems" to be happening with the Zomm function slowly happening all the time. We can't be sure recording is happening though as we can't rewind the tape to playback and see.
I noticed on mine, I had to use small amounts of compressed air to stop it from focusing slow. Dust will do this, It has a small motor and it could be dirt slowing it down. Sounds like display problems also.
This does require disassembly to remedy the problem. There are various possible fixes. The most prevelant I have seen is cold solder connections of the board connector for the fpc cable from the top operation switch block ass'y. All you need is someone who can handle this task, like a professional. The controls that you are experiencing problems with are all linked with one cable and connector. One bad solder joint can cause serveral operation faults. Good Luck, magic seadog
I will attempt to get you an illustration tommorrow. Disassembly entails removing all the cabinet screws marked with an arrow. You will need to remove the battery compartment from the rear to access the cable connector, but only after removing the side cabinet with the lcd, front ass'y snaps out first. No need to remove the screws from the lcd frame which are marked with arrows.
More later,

1. Remove 6 screws on the bottom.
2. Rmove 2 screws, top front and remove the front corner part.
3. Remove 3 screws top front and top of cabinet.
4. remove 3 screws at the rear; top left battery compartment,
below the exposure batton and above the start/stop switch.
Now you may proceed to pull the front assembly forward, it has some claws that snap into the side cabinet that need a little encouragement to let go. Don't be concerned if the fpc cable comes loose, it will plug back in OK. Everything else slips apart to appear as the attached photo. The connector of concern is on the board pointed out in the photo labeled EJ-30 and comes off with 2 screws. There are 3 different fpc cables connected. The top operation cable is obvious. It usually is simplest to apply some flux and reaffirm the solder joints rather than applying new solder which is difficult to control with very small tolerance. That is your choice. Always clean up with isopropyl alchohol or flux remover of some kind.
Good luck,

If you grasp the front cabinet and pull in the direction of the selector switch (Japanese refer to this as the right side as you face the lens) the claws will let go OK. I've never broken one.
Sincerely,
MS
I,m afraid that the photo and the explaination were confusing. You're right, the front cabinet is where the lens is. And the explanation pertained to that. The photo is the end result of having the unit disassembled to the point of exposing the part in need of repair which is the small board that is pointed out. Two screws hold it in place.
Take care,
ms

The above comment sentence that reads:
"Recording "seems" to be happening with the Zomm function slowly happening all the time."
Should read:
"Recording "seems" to be happening with the Zoom function slowly happening all the time."
Also, there are no Error codes displayed on the LCD viewer.
The camera has had the battery removed and been allowed to
re-initialize after 30 seconds of removal as per trouble shooting proceedure recommended @ Sony.com.
Sony.com recommends we send it to them for servicing repair as there are no service centers in our area registered with them.
Thanks again for your time in this matter.

Do you have dis-assembly detailed instructions with detailed pictures...your saying re-solder the connections, right?
I can do that....if that is the problem...time will tell..

This line should read: "The stop, pause, fast forward buttons are non functional when this occurs."
Sorry for the spelling error.

Sounds like a plan.
I'll wait for the illustrations though. How many cabinet screws are we talking and are we talking LCD side only? I can edit and enclose a .jpg(s) of the camera in Microsoft Paint for clarity if needed. Lets make our instructions step by baby step if you don't mind here. I'll be a virgin on this. Oh my!

Hi Magic,
Resin flux, hummm, I might have to get that.
Whoa, that picture sure looks intimidating, huh? I sure hope nuttin' plastic snaps off.
Got any tips on the where abouts of those front assembly claws that snap into the side cabinet that need a little encouragement to let go?? That'll make the pry points at the proper place needed.
Those are some good virgin instructions, by the way. Well versed for a beginner. AND well appreciated.
Thanks
Regards

Ah, it's nice to know where that elusive front cabinet is, I would have thought the lens was the front.
Imagine that?
OK, well try that when we get all these duckys in a row....supplies and such...

I'll maybe get to attempt this repair this week. I pooped from bird hunting right now.
Thanks for the additional comment.
