Can you lay the KitchenAid refrigerator on it's side to transport?

Lay down a shipping blanket or an old blanket and transport the freezer on it's back.

it is not recommended to lay an appliance with a compressor, the reason is that the compressor oil will run to one side and the appliance will not function properly. i have heard that if laid down the make sure to stand the appliance upright for several days before plugging it in.

As far as I know, you can transport a refrigerator laying down but you should leave it upright for 24 hours BEFORE you plug it in.

Although it is not recommend to transport on its back, it can be done if you block the conpressor up and pad it.

BUT you should always let the refrigerator stand upright for 6 hours for just major tilts, so I would highly recommend 24 hours to be safe if you transported it on its back.

You do not want to lay that refrigerator on its side because the refrigerant will leave the compressor and fill the system with liquid refrigerant where it should only be existing in a gaseous state, and if the refrigerator is tilted far enough over or lay-ed onto its side then the refrigerator will have to stand up-right and un-plugged for at least 24 hours before the liquid refrigerant will settle back down where it belongs, and then the refrigerator should actually function again if there was no other damage caused when moving the unit.

Thoughts on buying a used refrigerator.
1. Can you see the machine running at normal temperatures. That is, the freezer should be at 0 to 4 degrees and the food compartment at 34 to 39 degrees.(You'll need a thermometer) If not, have it corrected or walk away.
2. Does it it cycle on and off. It should be running 30 to 70 percent of the time. If any more than the high number, either have the problem corrected, or walk away.
3. Does it make ice, dispense it, and does the water delivery system work. Although sometimes easily corrected, repairs can become very pricey.
4. Can you transport it without the machine being layed on it's side? This is critical to the compressor.
5. Parts? If you have the model number as well, with both, call any large appliance parts house. Ask if they can order the bottom crisper drawer for the fresh food side. If yes, then your O.K.

Yes as long as the coils that carry the freon is located on the top side of the compressor when laying down. Look at the lines on the compressor. You should see 2 of them. 1 larger than the other. Imagine you are tilting the refrigerator. If the lines are on the right side you can it down on it's left side ok. If they are on the left side you lay the fridge down on it;s right side. Not true. Refers since the 1950's are sealed units but for safety's sake let it sit for awhile after you move it.
