Ok, I'm an idiot for having ever downloaded or used MacKeeper. I think I know that now. Anyway, I was kind of delirious with the flu yesterday and decided to "clean up" my MacBook. It's an old MacBook, if that matters, running OS 10.6.8 AKA Snow Leopard. I opened MacKeeper's Smart Uninstaller and saw that I evidently had 2 different versions of Firefox on my computer. I checked the dates on each and told MacKeeper to remove the older one. Stupid me. Now my bookmarks are gone. I've tried messing with my Firefox profiles in the Profile Manager, but nothing has worked. I really need those bookmarks for my job and I'm TOTALLY confused. Checked the trash, there's nothing in there. So I don't know where stuff "goes" when you use MacKeeper to remove it.
Honestly I'm not sure they are retrievable if they've been deleted but hopefully someone else might be able to offer something. Here is what I can offer though, in the future save your bookmarks as a json file and they'll always be safe. Just continue to save as you update them. This is how I was able to transfer mine between laptops when I bought my Acer 5 years ago and I still have it on my flash disc.
