Keyboard Today I bought a new keyboard, as on the old one's n key didnt want to work. I plugged in the new keyboard, and, voila, the n key still doesnt work. PLEEEASE someone help me!! Thanks Erica

Could be either a short in the Keyboard or it is not USB adapter compatible, some mice are like this. Plug it into a computer with PS2 port and see if it still malfunctions, if it does then the keyboard has a short, if not, it is incompatible with a USB adapter. Keyboards send two codes whenever a key is pressed, one for the key itself and one to let the computer know it the Shift/Ctrl/Alt keys are being pressed.

Keyboard Is Dirty:

Keyboards should be cleaned with "spray-n-wipe" cleaner and a cloth or tissue on a monthly basis. Ensure that computer is not powered up while cleaning the keyboard. Compressed air can also be used to clean between the keyboard keys. Another tip: clean the keys with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol.

"Keyboard Not Found" Message:

Your keyboard is not plugged into the computer securely. Unplug it and plug it back in and the problem should go away. If this doesn't work, follow procedure: "Computer isn't taking inputs from keyboard" (below).

Key Is Stuck:

1. If a key does not work or is stuck in the down position, you may try to remove it with a CPU "chip puller" tool. These simple "L" shaped tools are great at pulling out keys. Once you've pulled out the stuck key, you can try to stretch the spring to "reanimate" its action.

Computer Isn't Taking Inputs From Keyboard

1. Is keyboard connected to computer? Ensure that the keyboard is plugged into the keyboard jack and not into the mouse jack. If the keyboard was unplugged, plug it back in and reboot the computer.

2. If the keyboard still doesn't work on boot-up, power down the computer and try to borrow a friend's known-good keyboard for troubleshooting. Plug the new keyboard up and boot up the computer. If the new keyboard works, the old keyboard is bad and needs to be replaced.

3. If the known-good keyboard doesn't work, check your BIOS to make sure it sees the keyboard. It should say, "installed." If the BIOS recognizes the keyboard, then you probably have a bad keyboard port.

I Plugged Keyboard Into Mouse Port

1. Many mice and keyboards today use a PS/2 connector
. If you plugged your keyboard into the mouse port (or viceversa), follow steps 2 and 3.

2. Shut down the computer and plug the keyboard into the keyboard port. The keyboard port is usually marked with a "keyboard" symbol. Plug the mouse into the mouse port (usually marked with a mouse symbol).

3. Reboot the computer; the keyboard should work now. If keyboard doesn't work, check your BIOS to make sure the BIOS recognizes the keyboard. You should see the words, "installed" or "enabled" under the keyboard.

4. If the BIOS recognizes the keyboard but it still doesn't work, you may have a bad keyboard port.

I Spilled a drink on my keyboard!

1. If you spill any liquid in the keyboard, turn it upside down ASAP. Drain all the water out of the keyboard, shaking it if necessary. If you've spilled water into the keyboard, just let it dry. You may use a hair dryer to dry out area under the keys (remember, too much heat and you could damage the electrical components).

2. If you've spilled a soda into the keyboard, completely rinse it in warm water. No soap please! You may use a hair dryer at this point or just let it dry for 2 days. Ensure the keyboard is perfectly DRY before you attempt to use it again. Don't plug a wet keyboard into electrical equipment. Think safety.

5. If the keyboard still doesn't work, replace the keyboard.

Please check whether your keyboard is properly plugged in to your computer. If it is plugged in properly then try and change the slot of the keyboard(if its a USB port keyboard). If this doesn't help then try to check the BIOS settings for keyboard settings.
To enter BIOS settings press DEL key continuosly or F8(Function key 8) continuosly until the BIOS menu appears. Under the menu select the option of Hardware->Keyboard-> check whether it is enabled or disabled. If it is disabled then enable it.

Try using this keyboard with another Computer, if it doesn't work with other Computer as well then you can get it replaced for a new one.

hook up a usb keyboard and see if it has the same problem. if so, you have a virus. if not, you need a new keyboard.

Sounds to be you just got a faulty keyboard from HongKong, if your old keyboard works except the the Z and the new keyboard works only with function keys, then it sounds to be that the new keyboard is not ment for your laptop. if anything you should of had the same problems as your old keyboard. try using a USB keyboard.

If you have both sets of keyboard and mouse plugged in, turn off the computer and remove the old mouse and plug in the new mouse. Reboot and if necessary use the keyboard to login. Once windows is loaded let it detect the new mouse and then shut down again. Take out the old keyboard and reboot. You should now be able to use both new pieces without problems.

i had this prblem before, bought a new one thinking it was broken. Two days after I got it i found a forum post from someone with this prblem too and a solution they had was this;

to uninstall all the logitech software from the computer and then unplug the keyboard from the USB and then uninstalling the keyboard frm Device Manager. shutdwn, plug the USB back in and then startup again.

I tried it and it worked ! I'd just bought a new one for nothing :s

What a drag! Did the tea have any sugar in it? Anything except water or plain tea won't wash off too easily. Dirt, dust and moisture don't clean off easliy. The question is, did any moisture get onto the motherboard? I've had to wash off a few contaminiated circuit boards and it took a few good soakings in warm water and a tooth brush over all the contacts to really remove the residue. From Coke to salt water I've gotten stuff to work but it has to be very clean. I suggest getting a new keyboard if the laptop is worth it and seeing if that works. It is probably salvageable but all the contacts need to be inspected.

key board dead , correct. ? even the caps lock key will not toggle its led.
my guess is you bought a clone keyboard from china, on fleabay
and its dead. as many are, some are wired wrong.
the ribbon cable on mine fits to a special connector that likes to break easy, is your broken this locking jack there?
is it plugged in upside down?
why did you buy a keyboard. was the other dead.

i bought it for cheap with dead kbd....
there is no HP drivers, HP retired this old PC, after 10 years.
so what makes you sure your non HP drivers are any good.?

what I'd do , us boot to a Knoppix v7 live boot(dvd/usbstic)(linux)
if the keyboard fails NOW, then its bad KBD. or the jack cable or connector there, (or inserted wrong) or damage. there.
buffer chip is blown up with ESD events. (electrostatic discharges)

is the keyboard dead in BIOS
on ours we hit ESC or F10 and BIOS screens pop
power on hammer ESC or F10 or what the screen tells you to hit.
the go in to BIOS screens, now test the keyboard.
using say the arrow keys to navigate the BIOS menus
if the ESC and F10 key are dead that is a bad keyboard.
what must work here is the electronics.

1. correct keyboard, some clones will never work.
2. cable not damaged
3. cable not upside down
4. connector there not damage the lock not broken,(easy)
5. the MOBO buffer chip not ESD damaged.
6. BINGO BIOS now works by key commands
