3com Switch Intermittently Losing Connection.

I have a 3 buildings and a network set up that consists of three UN-managed 3com switches that are interconnected together from one building to the other(each building has its own 3com switch). NOTE: The first building has in it a LinkSys WiFi(DHCP enabled) which is connected to from my ISP's router and then to the 3com switch in the same building. I found out that the DHCP coming from the LinkSys 192.168.x.x through the switches till it gets to the Ethernet Patch Panel at the second building have no interruption until it gets to the 3COM Baseline Switch 2016/16ports in the same office. I'll have to remove and re-insert the patch cable before there will be internet, even when the internet comes, it will be intermittent. But from the first building where the internet is coming from, I cant see any intermttentcy on the link. This happen almost everyday. NOTE: Each port on the switch were tested. The switch and the test PC were power cycled respectively, all to no avail. Yet the patched port on the patch panel keeps running with DHCP without running through the switch ports in the second building. Please help and provide a permanent solution to this problem. Thanks in anticipation.

This could be a problem with the second switch unit. what happens if you connect a pc to this cable, is that intermittent, if so, that is your problem. try fault finding with a LAN cable tester to see if there's any issue with the link cable.

Do the ports work when the cables are connect?  I did some re-search and this seems to be an ongoing issue with 3com switches.  It should not effect the use of the switch

How do i Reset or break in to get reset my password on 3Com 2948 Baseline Switch 48Port SFP Plus

The resetting of the password requires the installation of a console cable to the console port.

Be sure the terminal emulator program is set to VT-100 management using compatible, 38400 baud rate, no parity, 8 data bits and Console connection one stop bit.

Use the included cable, or be sure that the pin-out complies with a standard null-modem cable

Once the cable is connected, reboot the switch. Type a Ctrl/C until you enter the failsafe mode. This will be denoted with the prompt: “CFE>”
At the prompt execute the following commands:

CFE> passwrd
CFE> reset -sysreset

At this point the password has been reset.

3com nj220 central config error response from device

Found that the problem was in the installation of the service.

There were two .exe in the installation software, one labeled setup.exe and the other "3Com IJNJ Configuration Software.exe". setup.exe is what needs to be used and it will in turn call the other. I had opened the other directly.

Inherited 2 switches 3com 4228g (3c17403) password problem

I haven't worked with these switches but generally settings such as ip address and factory defaults can be set through the Console Interface (CLI). You will need a null-modem cable to access this and a terminal client (Windows Hyperterminal works).

Hope that helps

I cann't connect to my switch

The primary connection method for those switches would be serial connection. In the box there should have been a DB9 serial to RJ45 cable. Hyperterminal default settings would allow you to connect.

Download free version of HyperTerminal for Vista : ftp://ftp.hilgraeve.com/htpe/htpe63.exe
Make a new connection :
connect using COM1 (depends of your configuration)
19 200 bits/sec
8 data bits
No parity
1 stop bit
No control of flux

And push enter twice to display a "Login:" prompt.
Connect using default user/passwords : http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/switches/ss3/management/ug/setup.htm#13131

Mini GIBIC Problem

I would try changing ports and see if that resolves the issue, if not, then run a fox and hound on the cable. even though you have a connection light on the swith in building 3 I would also try differant port or swithc, I would also check the ends of the cables to make sure both ends have a good connection. Hope this helps.
