Our Toshiba VCR won't play tape. It ejects tape after a few seconds.
We've had the player for 2 years. I bought it so I could dub VHS tapes to DVD's and Hi 8 tapes to DVD's. The VHS tape now won't play, VCR just ejects it after it starts playing. This is the 2nd VCR we've had to do this. Does anyone know what is wrong? We took the first VCR apart and cleaned it, but that didn't help.

I had this problem when copying an old family vhs tape. I had to unscrew
the top of the magnavox to access the vhs tape. Then, I gently removed
the tape and replaced the cover. After winding the tape back, I put it
in the player and immediately pushed fast forward for about 3 seconds
before hitting play followed by d.dubbing. I was able to make a copy of
the tape and did not damage my original.
There are any number of reasons why it won't play. The loading basket is jammed, the video tape has got tangled up in the mechanical section of the vcr or the loading gears are stripped. Unplug machine and remove top, [screws side and back] if the tape is spewed carefully remove by cutting it and clean tape particles, for any other problem have a technician check it out.
If the entire VHS is full then you can easily transfer the VHS contents to the DVD. The video will play while it is recording onto the DVD, but you don't have to have it hooked up to any TV for it to record. Now if you don't know how long the VHS content is that you want to record to DVD, then you will have to hook up the player to a TV so that you can press stop when you reach the end of the content you want recorded. At least this is true in the way that I use to transfer VHS to DVD:
1) Turn on the unit 2) Insert VHS tape 3) Insert DVD-+R or DVD-+ RW 4) Using remote, press VCR 5)Using remote, press play then pause the tape where you want to start recording. 6)Using remote, press DVD 7) Using the remote, press DUBBING. The VHS should start to play and the DVD should start recording
When using this method, don't hit the RECORD button!
Depending on the procedure you may be pressing the record button instead of the D.Dubbing or Dubbing button. When recording from VHS to DVD you must first, load the blank DVD and VHS home movies, then play the VHS movies, then PAUSE the VHS movie when you want to START recording... then the only the you have to do is pressing the D.Dubbing button or the Dubbing button. If your VHS tapes starts to play after the Dubbing button is pressed you have been successful in Dubbing.
1. Insert a blank DVD disc in the DVD deck and close the disc tray. 2. Insert the VHS video tape you wish to copy into the VCR deck. 3. Find the place on the VHS tape from which you want to start dubbing using the PLAY, FF, REW and PAUSE functions. For best results, pause playback at the point from which you want to record. 4. Press the DUBBING button on the Remote Control or DUB on the front panel. The Dubbing menu appears. 5. Use the arrow keys to select the desired Record Mode: EP, LP, SP or XP. 6. Select [Dubbing] then press ENTER or DUBBING to start copying. 7. To stop dubbing at any other time, press STOP (x). Dubbing will stop automatically when the VHS tape ends.
