When does it shake? If it shakes at idle (car is stationary) then it's likely a cylinder misfire. Could be a bad spark plug, ignition coil, O2 sensor... .. If shaking at idle a trip to a shop with a diagnostic tool will tell you where to look. If shaking is under braking it's likely a warped disc brake, if it's shaking at freeway speeds it's likely an out of balance tire. Will need some more info to give you a better answer.

I have a Mazda MPV 2004 van that recently had the check engine light come on. Over time, the van started to **** and shake whenever idling in Drive. It shakes for few seconds, idles smoothly, then starts...

i would try to replace the maf sensor first because ive seen that a few times on ford and mazda vehicles (same vehicles really with different names) and also clean the throttle plate at time u change the maf.

Transmission kicks shifting to second gear

This is a known issue with certain '03 and '04 MPV transmissions; my 2003 had the same problem. There is a Mazda technical service bulletin about this - 05-003/004 (Shift Shock). You need to take the van to a qualified shop and have them flash the transmission control module (TCM) with new firmware.

I had this done. It did not completely fix the problem but it did reduce its occurrence.
