Remove and check color cartridge error

Cannot get this message to go away. All light flash and printer will not print, copy or scan. I have tried new cartridges, a cartridge that works in an identical printer and I have cleaned all contacts on both color and black cartridges and print heads. Have also reset after disconnecting and pressing #,and 6 simultaneously. Same message always appears. Have never used non-HP cartridges. HP support has not been helpful. After paying for phone support and a promise that they would fix the problem all I got was advice to buy a new printer. Unless this gets resolved, not likely to purchase from HP again. I've gotten better tech support from most other vendors.

Exact same problem, except ours started right after the weak tabs on the door cover broke off. Maybe a connection between door cover problems and this error??

  • onlinedancer Dec 07, 2007

Having same problem, all of a sudden "printer cartridge error" appears, all 3 lights are blinking. I replace cartridges with new ones. The door being broken off has nothing to do with it since my door broke off and it continued to work for 2 years. Problem still persisting! Very Frustrating.

  • BlHeron Oct 26, 2008

Giving up on HP, too. Only printers I have ever owned, but sitting here with $100 worth of ink and keep getting message to "check cartridge" or "door open" or "align cartriges." Nothing works. Have cleaned, new cartridges---everything but toss it out the window (that's next!).

This has happened before, but ususally resolves with a simple cleaning. This time it just keeps getting worse, not better. HP PSC950.

I was woundering are these new cartages or refiled ?
cause our wont work with refilled caratages

so this is how i found that out !

Issue After you install a print cartridge, the scan, copy, and fax lights begin to flash at the same time. The printer will not print. One of the following error messages may display on the control panel:

  • Color or Right Print Cartridge is not compatible
  • Incorrect Print Cartridge(s)
  • Print Cartridge Problem
  • Incorrectly Installed Cartridge(s)
  • Black or Color Cartridge(s) Failed
Solution Follow the steps below until the above issue is resolved. All of the following steps may not be necessary to resolve the issue. When the lights stop flashing, the issue is resolved. NOTE: Either one or both of the cartridges could be causing the problem. Step one: Remove, inspect, and reseat the problem cartridge The print cartridge may not have full electrical contact with the printer. Removing and reinstalling the cartridge may help. NOTE: HP cannot guarantee the quality of remanufactured or refilled cartridges.
  1. Make sure the printer is on. Press the Power button if it is not lit.
  2. Open the printer cover, and then wait until the print cartridge carriage is idle and silent.
  3. Press down lightly on the end of the problem cartridge to release it. Figure 1: Removing the tri-color cartridge remove and check color cartridge error - c00838141.gif
  4. Slide the cartridge out and inspect it. CAUTION: Do not touch the copper electrical contacts or the ink nozzles. Figure 2: Electrical contacts and nozzles c00838142.gif 1 - Copper electrical contacts 2 - Nozzles
    • Check the electrical contacts for debris.
    • Make sure all the clear nozzle protective tape has been removed. CAUTION: Do not attempt to remove the copper electrical strip. Figure 3: Removing tremove and check color cartridge error - c00838143.gifle protective tape c00838143.gif 1 - Protective tape
    • Look at the number on the print cartridge label and make sure it is compatible with your printer. Compatible print cartridges are listed in the Printer Reference Guide supplied with your printer.
  5. If the cartridge is compatible, reinstall it in the printer:
    • Color cartridges go into the left carriage slot.
    • Black cartridges go inremove and check color cartridge error - c00838144.gifcarriage slot. Figure 4: Sliding cartridge into place c00838144.gif
Step two: Clean the problem cartridge contacts If the steps above did not solved the problem, follow the steps below to clean the electrical contacts on the print cartridge and in the carriage in the printer.
  1. Gather the following items to clean the cartridge and print carriage:
    • Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available. Tap water may contain contaminants which could damage the cartridge.
    • Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
    • Sheets of paper or paper towel to rest the cartridges on during cleaning.
  2. Open the printer lid and wait until the print cartridge carriage stops moving.
  3. Remove the cartridge and place it on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up. NOTE: If you are removing a print cartridge, try to clean the contacts quickly enough that the cartridge is not outside of the printer for more than 30 minutes. The ink can dry and clog the nozzles if the cartridge is outside of the printer for too long.
  4. Unplug the printer.
  5. Dip a swab in the clean water, and then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp.
  6. Clean the print cartridge cremove and check color cartridge error - c00838145.gifillustration below shows the contacts. Do not touch the nozzles. Figure 5: Electrical contacts c00838145.gif

It seems that while its whinging about the colour cartridge most of the time all you need to do is pull the BLACK cartridge and give THAT one a wipe - nice one HP ?? - sorted mine out twice now anyway. apparently they share some connectors or something so it can't actually tell the difference. eugh.

Message says problem with tri color cartridge

I don't think the date on the cartridge is the problem. It might be the electronic on your color cartridge. If there is an orange light flashing and the printer won't pull the paper to print, in 99%, the problem is one of the cartridges. Try removing the color cartridge and gently wipe out the electronic with a dry cloth. Put it back in and try to print. If that doesn't help, try removing the color cartridge and print (I am not sure if that will work, because all in one printers usually need both cartridges in order to print, but you can try that too). You can also try scanning something and see what the message on the printers display tells you. If there is an E an the color button is blinking, I think you should replace your color cartridge.

Hi,

To be able to understand the problem, you should give extra info about the lights.
Please find the information below about the status lights that provide information about error conditions of your printer. But first you need to install the driver for your operating system. The drivers are necessary to print documents and scan images. These drivers must be installed to use the print and scan features.

If the On light, Check Print Cartridge light, Check Paper light, and Start Copy, Black and Start Copy, Color lights are all flashing, do the following:

1 Verify that the front-panel overlay is attached to the HP PSC.
2 Turn your HP PSC off and on by disconnecting the power cord and reconnecting.

Problem 1: “ON” light is on, “check paper” light is blinking and “check print cartridge light” is off .

Explanation 1: The paper tray is empty, the HP psc has a paper jam, or the paper size setting and paper in paper tray are not the same.

Solution 1:
• Load paper, or remove thepaper jam.
• Change paper in paper tray to correct size.
• Change paper size on the computer software.
Then press On/ Resume to continue.

Error 1203

hi..

error 1203 means either or both cartridges have short circuited and needs replacement..

You will need to perform the following steps to find out which cartridge is defective:

1. With the printer turned ON, open the front cover and remove both cartridges from the printer.
2. Power the printer OFF and unplug the power cable for 30 seconds. Plug the power cable back in and turn ON the printer.
3. If the error message is now cleared from the printer, please perform the "Self-Test" by following the steps below:
{
1. Make sure the printer is in “Copy Mode.”
2. Press the “Menu” button once.
3. The screen will display “Copy Menu: Copies”.
4. Press the left arrow button once. The screen will display “Copy Menu: Tools”.
5. Press the check button once. The screen with read “Tools: Maintenance”.
6. Press the check button once. The screen with read “Maintenance: Ink Levels”.
7. Press the right arrow button until the screen reads “Maintenance: Print Test Page”.
8. Press the check button once. This will start the Self-Test. Once the page has printed, the printer will stop. The test is not continuous.
}

If the printer has detected a "Cartridge Missing" error, then please follow the steps given below:

1. Turn the power OFF.
2. Open the front cover.
3. Turn the power back ON. The print cartridge carrier should move to the install position located in the middle of the printer. If it does not, close and reopen the cover:
4. Reseat both cartridges in the printer and check for the error.
5. If the error still displays, then remove the color print cartridge.
6. Close the cover.
7. If there is no error indicated by flashing lights, the color cartridge has short-circuited.
8. However, if you continue to get an error, repeat steps 1-3, and then go to step 9.
9. Remove the black print cartridge and reinsert the color cartridge.
10. If there is no error indicated by flashing lights, the black cartridge has short-circuited.
11. If you continue to receive an error in both cartridge scenarios, both print cartridges have short-circuited.

Message in LED is ''Remove and check color cartridge''

It means that the printer has detected a problem with the color cartridge. If it holds multicolors one could be empty & the cartridge must be replaced in order for it to work. Best advice would be to try a new cartridge and see if the error message goes away. Hope this helps.
