My fax won't print copy's or incoming faxes. If I do a self test there are lines that are printed. The ink level says 4 / 8. I took the cartridge out and cleaned the copper area as said in manual...

Based ENTIRELY of the total LACK of make and model information about your fax unit, my guess is that the software DRIVER is corrupted! But of course, that is a total GUESS! Let me show you why that is SO IMPORTANT!

My favorite ant broke her leg ... leaving her only FIVE good legs to run around on! Most people know that ants (INSECTS) have six legs. But you MIGHT have assumed that my ant was my mom's sister, or my dad's sister, and that I simply misspelled AUNT!

Installing a new print cartridge Follow the steps below to install a print cartridge.
  1. Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging and, being careful to touch only the black plastic, gently remove the plastic tape using the pull tab. 2. With the cartridge compartment cover open, insert the print cartridge into the print cartridge cradle with the contacts facing into the unit. When the cartridge is seated in the print cartridge cradle, push the top of the cartridge towards the back of the unit until the print cartridge clicks into place. Repeat this step.
  3. Close the cartridge compartment cover and control panel.
  4. Press the Start/Enter button.
  5. On the keypad, press 1 if the replacement print cartridge is new or 2 if the replacement print cartridge is old. NOTE: When you put in a new cartridge, you must choose 1: New .When you put in a used cartridge, choose 2: Used . This helps you to check the correct amount of ink you have left.

My fax won't print, neither faxes nor copies. The paper goes through & it makes sounds like it is printing but nothing on the paper. The machine says the ink level is 6/8. I "aligned" and...

Though the ink level it said was "6 / 8", when I removed the cartridge to examine it looked bone dry empty to me. I replaced the ink cartridge. It works fine, and reports the ink level as "8 / 8".

Installed a brand new cartridge in hp 1040 fax but prints very poorly(light )

remove the new cartridge

TAKE A MICROFIBER CLOTH MOISTENED WITH RUBBING ALCOHOL AND WIPE THE PRINT HEAD ( THE PART OF THE CARTRIDGE THAT CONTACTS PAPER)

REINSTALL THE CARTRIDGE THEN TEST

ALSO YOU MAY WANT TO WIPE OFF THE CONTACTS ON THE BACK OF THE INK CARTRIDE WITH THE MICROFIBER CLOTH MAKING SURE THERE ARE NO FINGERPRINTS ON THE CONTACTS
