I have a Lexmark X7170 with only a black ink cartridge in it. The printer recognizes the color cartridge is missing, yet continues to print as if there were a color cartridge (only prints black, no gray). In the preferences section, the option to 'print color images in black and white' is grayed out and cannot be selected. I recently uninstalled and re-installed the printer and updated drivers, and never had this issue prior to doing so. What can I do to get a few shades of gray?

Actually your printhead on the cartridges is probably clogged. I usually take the cartridges out, wet a paper towel and put in a dish and put in microwave for 20 seconds, then put the cartridge printhead on the paper towel for 10 seconds, and then blot with a dry towel. You should see the various colors in the color and black cartridges. Do it several times until ink in freely flowing. Put back in printer and run a clean cycle and try printing normaly. Unfortunately it is all true.
Personally I would stay away from Lexmark, I am a Canon fan, the MP520 looks real nice, but it's personal choice at the end of the day.
