Battery Problem I bought a Nikon Coolpix L12 Digital Camera this past summer and have had no problem until last night. My camera turned off and said "battery exhausted." After changing the batteries twice with new batteries, the lens would open for a second then close and the camera turned off once again saying "battery exhausted." I don't know what happened.

same model, same problem. new batteries and are correctly set as alkaline. The voltage measures at 1.5 volts on both batteries so I know its not batteries.
Suspect this is a known problem to Nikon.

Me too. I have also noticed this problem with my Nikon Coolpix L12. Changing the batteries/rechargeables is not noticed by the camera- it claims the batteries are empty. A couple of times off/on and it starts working again. There must some kind of fault in the battery charge recognition algorithm.

Well... similar with the Nikon Coolpix L15 that I just got as an early Holiday gift. Seems it is part of the startup portion of the software when you turn the camera on. It is intermittent and if I know intemittent problems is going to be HARD to fix. My guess, (based upon me being an embedded software engineer) is a faulty or failing battery power sensor being interpreted by the startup software. The sensor may just fail occassionally or be a quality problem at the supplier (camera is made in CHINA... uh... enough said?!). I suspect that Nikon's quality control has little perview at the subcontractor component level. Don't know... although the camera was relatively inexpensive for the features... if this component fails HARD... you can kiss your investment in Nikon good bye. My workaround is hit the on/off a few extra times and say a little prayer to the Digital Diety.

Ditto. Lenny in Austin Texas. I'll try the on-off routine.

I have the same problem.  My Nikon Coolpix 4100 was working fine, but since the last time I got an exhausted battery message and replaced the batteries, it has never worked.  I have tried replacing 3 sets of new batteries, but does not work. Same "exhausted battery" message each time.

L15 - Same Battery Problem..."battery exhausted" appears even after using brand new..!

  • Anonymous Dec 27, 2007

I just bought my camera before Christmas and it worked fine while I was on vacation. When I got back home it started acting up saying, "Battery exhausted". Even when I put in brand new batteries. I'm taking this camera back. I didn't pay $150 for nothing.

  • Anonymous Jan 05, 2008

Same thing here. Worked fine for a few months (rarely used since I have DLSR's) but then one day battery exhausted message came on. Won't go away! Guess I'll be sending it to Nikon. Another $10 for shipping added to this faulty $150 camera1

same problem here with a recently bought L15. Works fine with (lower voltage) rechargeable batteries, but says battery exhausted with new unused alkaline batteries (who have a higher voltage). Strange. Nikon should come up with a solution soon.

I just had this problem today myself, and looked everywhere online for a solution. I changed the batteries (to Panasonic), and it didn't help. But i tried different batteries (Energizers) and the camera started working again.

ITS NOT THE BATTERIES -- check out the internet (google "nikon coolpix battery exhausted" and you'll see hundreds of people are experiencing this glitch. best fix i've found so far: remove batteries and memory card, then replace batteries and try again. Maybe firmware update works too, but this fix is not confirmed.

I have this problem occasionally. It happens when the battery completely dies.

The fix for me has been to

  • remove both the battery and the flash card.
  • Then install only the battery AND
  • immediately plug the camera in to my computer with the USB cable.
  • After a few seconds the camera green light comes on indicating that it is charging.

I wait a while then insert the flash card and all is well.

It is wise to let the battery fully charge, indicated by the green circle around the power button going off.

I think This problem can be avoided by not letting to battery completely die.

SOURCE: Battery Problem

These cameras have a internal battery that holds data for the camera to keep its settings. These batteries can be replaced but the camera has to be disassimboled to change it they should be able to be changed at a local camera shop pretty cheap.

SOURCE: Battery Problem

I believe it is the contacts in the battery case. You can stretch/bend the contacts further out and the problem seems to go away for a while.

Do you have store your Nikon CoolPix 4000 battery for a long time as the battery power exhausted? If so, it maybe have cause great damage to the Li-ion Nikon camera battery, you'd better store a Li-ion camera battery about 40% power and at a place about 25 degrees Celsius

My camera nikon coolpix l12 keeps saying lens error, what should i do

This is a serious problem with Coolpix cameras. If it is still under warranty then take it to a warranty repair facility for Nikon.
If it is not under warranty you could try removing the battery for a few minutes, put it back in and try the camera again. As a last resort before tossing the camera out.....CAUTION DOING THE FOLLOWING MAY RESULT IN PERMANENT DAMAGE TO YOUR CAMERA, DO THESE AT YOUR OWN RISK.... Other remedies that may work would be to gently tap on the sides of the camera to see if you lens may be stuck in a certain position. Or, you could gently and slightly twist the lens back and forth.... VERY GENTLY though. This may free up the lens and allow it to work.
I hope some of this works for you and good luck.

My wife's Nikon L12 pocket camera suddenly has an autofocus issue

my advice is to throw it away and go buy a better quality camera.....seriously. I bought one of those cameras and traveled to Brazil......same thing happened to me. When I returned to USA and inquired about this issue, the warranty was out by 10 days, and it would cost more to fix the camera than I originally paid for it. I was P.O'd...

Flash doesn't work on nikon coolpix l12

I actually just fooled around with mine because it was doing the same thing. It will only flash in the scene mode, but not the normal quickshot mode. i noticed under the camera symbol on the screen said BSS and i went into the menu and clicked on BSS and turned it off b/c it was on and that worked finally.maybe u can try it, if its the same situation.
