If this is just a recent issue, I would say it sounds like an A/C line is cracked somewhere, and leaking freon. Any decent auto shop can run a leak detection test on it to be certain.
Now I'm not sure if it's purely an A/C problem or something completely different. The problem of overheating is occurring without even running the A/C. The smell, I'm told, may not be freon but from the heat of the engine. We live in Panama and finding good mechanics or even auto shops with much equipment as we're in the "Interior," not up in the city. Maybe my suggestion of A/C caused you to only think along those lines. So far no one's been able to figure out the problem. Tomorrow it's going to the local tire shop as now the I'm afraid to use A/C at all but car still overheats. Thanks for your suggestion, though. We'll certainly ask the next fellow to consider it. Will let you know if we finally figure out what's happening.
