Yes we were sitting on the mower at each attempt. However, after posting our problem, we pushed and wiggled the seat sensor and it "clicked". We tried again and the mower did engage when the levers were pulled in.

Re: craftsman zts 7500 will not run with levers engaged
Cody,
Yes, I am sitting when I do engage the blades on my craftsman zts 7500. All you do is pull/push the engaged button to your left well you are seated.

You are burning oil. This usually is from a leaky gasket. Go to ebay and find kiddie boutiques. They sell the best quality cheapest new tecumseh gaskets
Should be relatively simple. There are 4-5 cotter pins that connect the mowing deck to the bottom of the mower. Pull the pins, push the metal rods out, and remove the deck!
There are adjustments on the levers and the wheel motors. They are located under the seat and are a buckle style adjustment. One side is RH thread and the other is LH thread this enables the rod to lengthen or shorten depending on the turning of the buckle.
check the "kill switch" they are usually located in the seating area. it senses for pressure or seat angle and will kill the mower if nobody is sitting on the mower. Good Luck
Be careful - running ungoverned will quickly destroy the engine. Look at the carburetor throttle lever. There should be two linkages attached -- one from the manual throttle lever, another from the governor. The linkage to the governor is usually a spring. Perhaps that came off or broke, or a foreign object is wedged in there.
The problem may be one of the safety switches. Make sure the blades are not engaged. The clutch pedal needs to be pushed all the way down, and there is another one that needs weight on the seat. Look around those areas for disconnected wires. Some even need to be in neutral. Lots of safety features.
The PTO switch contacts to operate the clutch that starts the blades is defective. I have replaced mine and the new one just failed again. Sears must know this is a defect problem but so far they are quiet about the problem
