I have this typewriter also. after replacing the ribbon and print wheel you have to press the (CODE) & (=) keys. This will align itself. I recently had to replace the print wheel and referred to the manual. Works like a charm.

Linda, Depending on what make and model you have it could be several things. The newer TW's use a print wheel which has to home itself each time the power is turned on. This tells the print motor how far to turn for the correct letter. Make sure there is no debris and everything is seated properly... platen, print wheel, etc. Once again, this depends a lot on what kind of TW you have. MM85

WP3400 & AX-12M

  1. Is the daisy wheel locked in the forward position?
    1. Pull the black lever back, away from the platen.
    2. Lift out the daisy wheel and inspect it for damage; replace the daisy wheel if it is damaged.
    3. Re-insert the daisy wheel and push the black lever towards the platen until it locks in place.
  2. Is the ribbon moving?
    1. Lift the ribbon cartridge out of the typewriter
    2. Inspect the ribbon for damage
    3. If the ribbon is silver, it is exhausted and must be replaced
    4. If the hammer has been striking in one place, there will be a clear area near the center of the ribbon.
    5. Turn the colored knob on the left side of the ribbon cartridge counter-clockwise to advance the ribbon a small amount. Replace the ribbon if it will not advance.
    6. Re-insert the ribbon
  3. Turn on the typewriter, insert a piece of paper into the typewriter and type a few letters
    1. Did the hammer move forward?
    2. If the hammer moved, did the ribbon advance with each keystroke?
If the hammer did not move or the ribbon did not advance, the typewriter will require service. If the typewriter still does not make an impression on the paper, your typewriter will require service.

I put in new Brother ribbon - won't type. I hit code reset.

MAKE SURE THE RIBBON IS INSTALLED CORRECTLY AND IS BETWEEN THE TWO METAL "FINGERS" AND THE CARDHOLDER AND THE PRINTWHEEL IS LOCKED INTO PLACE (JUST PUSH FORWARD ON THE BLACK LEVER TO THE RIGHT OF THE PRINTHAMMER

Typewriter won't type letters

HI.. the hammer solenoid may be faulty..it should make a typing sound when you hit a key.( the printhammer moved and strikes the printwheel) or when you changed ribbons you might have unlatched the printwheel..there is a lever you press to relatch it until it "clicks"
If not that then make sure the ribbon is seated correctly, that it is between the printwheel and the black roller. Also visually inspect the ribbon so it is not caught in the printwheel.
