I just turned on my laptop and tried to print on my brother mfc-490cw printer wireless. It reads "offline." Any help?

Same problem, appears to be related to Brother sleep mode. Using the Connect / uncheck "User Printer Off-line" doesn't seem to work.

My Brother MFC-490CW Printer - wireless on my Vista laptop is also offline, when I re-started the computer, it was the first 5 minutes on-line and after I while is was offline again!

The Scanner works perfect. Also an XP machine in my network and works perfect.

I re-installed the software, deleted the printers. Nothing helped.
    Who can help me?

  • pgs001 Apr 13, 2009

I have exactly the same problem. I deleted the printer, re-installed and got some kind of error message about firewall. It says that the installation was completed successfully, however, I still have the same problem. The print file sits in the print queue and the printer status shows that it is 'off-line'. Can't seem to change the status from 'off-line' to 'online'. This all started happening yesterday, 04/12/2009.

I tried the solution. The only problem is that it doesn't let me uncheck ""; it's not checked to begin with. And there's a "connect" option, only it's shaded, not an active menu option that it will let me choose. Now what???

My desktop prints fine but my laptop says that the printer is off line. I can't find anything about it in the manual either. Please Help.

If you are running Vista and SNMP is turned off

d- Click on this a window box should open scroll down and see if SNMP feature is checked if it is then turn it off (unchecked) follow these steps
e- Under printers select Brother MFC-940CW printer right click
f- Select run as administrator
g- Select properties
h- Select ports
i- Select button configure ports
j- Under port settings uncheck enable SNMP
k- Click ok printer should be on line
l- To find MAC address for MAC filtering on router
m- Run the brother remote setup program and note the IP address
n- Run the command prompt as an administrator at the prompt type the following “apr –a” without the quotes and then hit return and note the physical address (MAC) for the above IP address you noted. Log on to your router and enter the MAC address from the step above and save.

I fixed this problem!

I have Windows Vista, and went to the printers and faxes folder in the control printer.

I clicked on "add a printer" at the top of folder, and the Windows program searched for all available printers. It found the one already in the system, and then basically found it again; it had the brother mfc 490cw label and the IP address.

I clicked on that one, and it basically it added the printer all over again. I clicked on "print test page," and it came out like it was supposed to. I printed several of my own pages just to make sure, and they came out too!!

I don't know what went wrong with the original printer addition or why it happed (it's still there, just not as the default; the newly added printer is now the default.). I also don't know if the same problem will happen again, but, if it does, I guess I'll just keeping adding the same printer all over again until the folder overflows!!!!

Hope this helps. It didn't really explain why this happens, but at least it got the printer working again (for now at least!!!)

I also fixed this problem which occurred after receiving faxes although that might be unrelated. My operating program is Vista on a Sony laptop.
1. Shut down MFC-490
2. Control Panel - Printers - Highligt MFC-490 - Delete Printer
3. Start - All Programs - Brother - MFC-490 - Uninstall
4. Turn on MFC-490 - configure wireless according to manual
5. Reinstall MFC-490 Drivers/Software
6. Start - All Programs - Brother - MFC-490 -Installation Diagnostics
7. All items should show connected
8. Control Panel - Printers - Highligt MFC-490 - Hold mouse pointer on it. Should show READY. Right click and print Test Page
PS I followed Best Solution to the extent of "uncheck enable SNMP"

My mcf490-cw brother printer has been printing wirelessly for years. Now, out of nowhere, it indicates it is off line and neither of my wireless computers can find it on the network. On the computer, it...

connect it to wireless network again

possible reason could be it goes offline because it looses connection to your network/router
reconnecting it again same way during the first time can resolve the issue

also check the printer if it has sleep mode/power saving mode options then turn it off

you can refer to call brother support or checking their website.it could be really helpful for you

I hope I help you even a bit

HI! my printer brother mfc-490cw is offline and wont print .what do i have to do to get it on line ? i own a mac . Louie

Go to system settings and select the 'Printer' option. Right-click on the printer and enable the 'Use Printer Online' function. Cancel all the printing jobs till that moment and redo the process. Sometimes the 'Printer Offline' message occurs due to a 'Job Stuck' issue. Check all network connections and functions. Be sure the network interfaces work properly. Turn the printer off and on to see whether the device is working properly.

Printer Offline and cannot get it back on

have you tried power off then on again, if yes, go to
START> PRINTER AND FAXES> right click your printer which is the brother mfc-490cw and uncheck USE PRINTER OFFLINE. when you right click your printer there, there shoul no check on the selection USE PRINTER OFFLINE. if that doesnt fix it still, check the usb cable or even try replacing it(the cable) or relocate to where is connected (usb port) on your pc.
a fine feedback would suffice

I have the same problem.

Try to ping the ip address of the printer. If its not responding then check the connectivity of the printer.

I can not print

You could try to use static ip to remove possible problems with dns retrieving:
  • Set the machine to static ip (Menu -> Network -> WLAN -> Boot Method -> Static).
  • Check the ip number on the machine (Menu -> Network -> WLAN -> IP address)
  • On your PC, go to Control Panel -> Printers
  • Right-click printer, choose Properties
  • Choose Ports and click "Add Port"
  • Double-click on Standard TCP/IP, follow the guide and type in your IP number earlier retrieved.
  • Save settings, press OK and the problem could be solved (if it was due to dns problems).
Also, if it works, you can change the network settings for scanner driver to go to ip address too instead of dns, even if it isn't a problem right now, it could later be.

My printer is connected to the internet, but status is 'offline'

Hey Bud. I had the exact same issue with mine. I called around and no one had an educated answer. I remembered that my Uncle Lester works for the IP department for the city of Beaumont. I called his house and of course he was at work. Just for grins I asked his 8 year old daughter how to fix it. She simply said, "Just unplug the router and plug it back in.... What a ********...." Then she hung up... Neddless to say this seems to work for everything else too.... Good luck.
