I have a FRT21FS5AW1 Frigidaire Top Freezer Refrigerator. The bottom isn't cooling all that great and the freezer isn't freezing ice cream. Also, the production of ice has become quite slow. We have cleaned the coils..back and underneath. Cleaned out the entire frig. Checked the little black thing that plugs into the compressor I think. Any ideas? Thanks
Check freezer for frost build up and if fan blowing, check condenser make sure clean, and fan blowing, check vents in refrig. make sure no blockage, controls should be in the middle setting, you can try turning freezer to Warmer freezer allowing MORE air to refrigertor side.
It wont benifit the freezer..
but u stated that it wasnt cooling well in ref. side.. it will help with that...
as far a defrost controls
thats ..if.. you have frost build up in you freezer side indicating a defrost control problem
Get another refrigertor... that looks like a blockage in the system or low on refrigerant
which means u have a leak somewhere in the refrigent system or a plug in the system somewhere.
should of been a lite layer of frost from top to bottom on your evaportor in the pic... if thats you evap.
I would cut the losses and get another one... dont know how old the frig. is ..
but its something u would have to call a knowlegable repairman for..
but I dont think the cost of fixing it would be worth keeping the frig. Thats my 2 cents.. sorry for the bomb.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions. We did check vents, frost build up, fan blowing and such.
I would like to know how allowing more air to frig side would benefit the freezer.
Also, I've read that it could be something to do with the defrost controls. Do you know how I can check these out?
I'm afraid I will have to call a pro in and I just can't afford that expense. Anything I can do on my own...I will try it.
Thanks again
I was able to remove the back panel in the freezer and discovered a large build up of ice on the left side. What can I do now?
Hi all.
Thank you to everyone that has offered help. After removing the chunk of ice, I plugged the unit back in. 18hrs later, I checked it again only to find NO cold air at all coming from the freezer. Unit is running, but no cold. I think it's a goner. Agree?
Thanks again,
Tracie
