I was having the exact same issue with my dsc-w55 and I followed the solution of another post from this site which was: "There is a problem internally with the lens. Likely, the focusing lens is jammed up. The lens will need to be disassembled and fixed, if possible, or replaced. Occasionally, a good "whack" in your hand can fix it. Just don't hit the lens, or lcd; or you can break them. Then there will be more damage." I gave it THREE good "whacks" in the palm of my hand, was careful not to hit the lens or LCD and VOILA! I just shot a few pics with my camera and so far so good. Good luck!
I would just like to say i tried "tapping" it "hitting" it and all that other magic u all suggested. MINE IS FING BROKEN FOREVER. DON"T TRY THIS PEOPLE!!!! I'll be spending the $200.
I suggest reporting this problem to Sony whether tapping on the palm of the hand works or not. Go to: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/emailform-di.pl?template=EN or calling 800-222-7669. They need to know how prevalent this problem is. It is unacceptable to produce a product that breaks 18 months after normal use. It is surprising to see how many people are completely satisfied with this solution of tapping the camera. I can get my camera to work as well, but I don't like that the camera is unreliable. There is obviously something wrong with the camera that should be addressed by the manufacturer. I am considering converting to Canon. My parents owned a Canon that developed a problem a couple years after initial use. Apparently it was a common problem and Canon was willing to fix it at no cost. Let's let Sony know about this common problem and maybe they will fix it.
I see a lot of replies around the fix of tapping or banging the camera gently, but there's another solution that worked for me. Apparently, sister Cybershots have the same issue. There are a ton of posts on this problem. What worked for me was tugging outward on the lens gently. There are two lens barrels on my W50 - a smaller one protruding from a larger diameter base component. With thumb and forefinger, I just pulled gently outward on the base barrel away from the housing of the camera and felt the smallest nudge, or click. The viewfinder came on instantly. Since then, repeated ons and offs show the camera working fine. Hope this helps others!
Ok i think i went a bit far. =(
after missing out on some really great fishing shots because of my camera playing up. it just sat there on my shelf untill i found this website. all the advice led to whacking it. so i tried it.
after whacking it and pulling the lens and pushing the lens.
it still didnt work. then somehow out of frustration. i grabbed the lens and twisted it. it clicked and was stuck there. neither in nor fully out. great! now ive done it. its even worse than before. so i decieded to undo the screws to take the lens out. now im sitting here with the lens in 4 pieces. i dont think its ever gonna work again.
so the moral of the story... just keep whacking it and dont be tempted to open the camera up. haha
luckly i bought a new W150 camera. if that plays up its going straight to sony under its new 1 year warrenty.

I tried pushing and pulling the lens I tried turning in on and off and when I decided that I had had enough of it I jumped on the camera lens down, it decided to work then to late the lens was ruined and in the bin it went, Sony never again canon for me every time.

I dropped my DSC-W50 on the floor this morning and got this problem too. After reading this, scepticallly I dabbed the camera in my palm 3- 5 times. It WORKS ! So happy, going to Venice tomorrow! Thanks

I was in the most picturesque place in St. Emilion in France when my camera DSC W50, a gift from my hubby last year,suddenly just won't let me take pictures and kept on showing "access" and switch off the camera notice! Luckily my hubby had brought his other Sony camera which he lent me so i still had pics of the rest of my holidays in Versailles and Arcachon.
When i got to the UK, i searched for anything that could help me sort out my camera's problem then i found your site! IT SORTED OUT MY DSC W50! It didn't work at first with a couple of gentle palm taps, then i tried the tap whilst powering up and BLIMEY...... It WORKED!

I DISCOVERED THAT MOST OF DIGITAL CAMERAS THAT HAVE THIS LENS PROBLEM IS A RESULT OF SOME DUST SPECS CLOGGING IN THE LENS RETRACT WHEELS\COGS...I USED TO CARRY MY CAMERA IN THE POCKET AND IT GOT SOME FLUFFS..RESULTING IN THIS PROBLEM...BANGING IS A WAY OF REMOVING A SPECS...CLEANING IT AFTER REMOVING THE LENS CAN DO MUCH BETTER
Just like million others on this site I tried gently tapping the camera and then twisted the lens a bit and it just started to work! Can not thank the site enough! But should definitely report this massive defect in the Sony Cybershot to the company.
I have or should i say had the dsc-w50 Its now in a pile of broken pieces in front of me. I took it apart trying to fix the same Problem: I receive "access" error when I turn on my camera. I changed my memory stick also without any success. I'm not some electronic genius but I've taken apart various electronics including my dsc-T100 Sony camera and fixed it!!! DON'T open this camera for this problem or you won't have a camera. Don't try twisting either of the lenses at all!! If you do you'll just jam it more. (I did this and regret it) You probably don't want to push the lens either because it doesn't just push in and out. It twists in and out so by pushing the lens your pushing against the motion of the twisting. (I realize that now that i have the camera in 25 little pieces in front of me) My suggestion DON'T take it apart no matter how skilled you think you are. I would listen to the voice of the people who got their camera's working by slamming them.
Hilarious...I thought everyone was crazy because I tried hitting it hard against my hand a few times, and still nothing...then all of a sudden, it's like I could hear the wheels turning in my camera again, and TA-DA!!! It worked again! I'm so happy because I'm going on vacation in a couple days and I can actually take some pictures!!! :) :) :)
I as well as many others was having the same problem...i can suggest 2 things. First try resetting the camera. Make sure it is off and take out the battery. Then hold down the shutter button for 30 seconds. Put the battery back in and then see if it works. If this doenst work but you are able to get your camera on another way you can set the camera back to its factory settings by going to the menu and under the setup scroll down to initialize. Click right and then click on OK. This sets the camera back to the way it was the day you got it. Internally of course.
Just figured I would add my experience as well. No amount of whacking worked for me, so I used pliers and pulled the lens all the way out while it was powering up and that worked for me.
I tried the banging thin...no such luck..it keeps telling me to turn it on and off again. I just e-mailed tech support. hopefully they will help.

Okay well i had this exact same problem i tried everything i read but it still wouldnt work till i decided to push the lense all the way in i turned on my camera they came in and out in and out till it stopped i turned it on and the lense came out and my camera works perfectly noww :) imm soo relievedd!!
I cannot believe that!!! i felt like a goon smacking it loadsa times. but you can hear soemthing clicking inside when its dieing =] When it stops its fixed. I had the same problem with my w90. i took it out of my pocket and it wouldn't work. i held down the power button for 30 seconds and it worked again! hope that helps. the palm slapping did NOT work...it just made it make a funny noise. i thought for sure it was then broken.
Knocking the camera sounds like it works but may create another problem. I have had this problem with p-100 , p-200 and now the w50, I have found a small drop, of wd40 placed on both sides ,two opposing sides,of the lens ring where it extends from the body will work also. Don't spray, its a bit too hard to control amount deposited. Use a toothpick or a stick to dip and then drop the oil.

I had the same problem with my Sony DSC W55 camera and pulled the front lense smothly and its start closing the lense normally.
I did this when the camera was switched on mode.
Please don't try with force.

I tried this reset, but the error came back. Read in other posts that it is a "flash capacitor" problem.

When I turn the camera on I get an orange flashing light near the view finder and the lens keeps extending and then retracting. The Instruction then follows "turn the power off and then on again". If I do this nothing changes and we still cant use the camera.
Please help. The camera is a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W30 6.0mega pixels.

Same thing happened to mine about a month after the warrenty expired. We had snow after thanksgiving, and I put it in my pocket to take some pictures of the kids in the snow. It worked fine, but when I brought it inside five minutes later - then lense would start to move when I turned the camera on, and the display said "Access" then "Turn the power off and on again" I turned it on and off a couple dozen times, recharged the battery, with no improvement.

Same problem, and although the palm was not enough, the benchtop tap did the trick!! Hurray!.Can anyone tell me if this is happening all the time, or at least more than once, and should I progress to a hammer?

I turn the camera on and the word Access appears and the lens move in and out some and then iake the turn off the camera and turn it back on. If I do what it ask the cycle starts over if I do nothing the camera turns off.
My 6 month old daughter was having a "cute moment" on her first Christmas, and the camera broke! The lens kept moving in and out and the screen read "access"- The camera is only about 9 months old and has never been abused.

Same same. Power on camera, "Cyber-shot" appears on the screen followed by "Access". While this is happening the bottom orange light is flashing by the manual veiwer, while the lense is going in and out. Next the camera will shut off lens and show on the screen "Turn the power off and on again." I have tried this, even removed the battery, no joy. I can still access menue and any photo in the memory.

My camera developed the same problem yesterday. At first I thought it was due to cold operating conditions or the batterfy running out. When bringing the camera indoors and recharging the battery didn't work, I got online and found this website.
The suggestion to pull the lens forward upon powering up didn't work.
Pounding the base of the camera against the palm of my hand worked great. After three slaps, I could access pictures I'd taken, though I still couldn't take photos. After three more slaps, the access error message went away, and the camera works fine again!

My son had the EXACT same problem that you all are describing. I was just about to spend $111 to have it repaired but I read your solutions and WOW was I excited that slamming it on my palm 4 times did the trick. It works perfectly.

Had the same problem whilst on a skiing holiday, and I thought it was the cold. Tried warming it up, charging the battery, resetting, shaking it, but to no avail. I couldn't believe your fix, but after reading all 35 of them I tried whacking it on my palm - didn't work; then pulling out the lens - didn't work; them whacked it on my palm whilst powering up, and Bingo! It now works like a dream! It is a great little camera, but I agree with the others, a little used camera which is well looked after should not go wrong just after the guarantee runs out!

Camera turns on with access across the screen, the lens opens and closes many times, then turn off power and on again, there is also an orange-yellow lite the bottom one flashing possibly a code of some kind that I don't ever remember seeing before.
I have the same problem, but it's not because the lenses are jammed, because they tend to go in and out as the message is showing on the screen.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Cybershot DSC W55 "Access Error" on power up - can't do anything ...message to say power off and try again. Numerous power resets do nothing.
Followed advise and tried to "shock" it into action, but still fails.
So very gently pulled lens out a bit further on power up, and Bingo! Now works fine!
Phew! What a relief, I was really worried the camera was screwed, but it looks like a bug in the camera on power up where the lens doesn't go out to it's full extent and fails it's power up tests!

I'm only posting this because I was suprised that "three smacks against the palm" actually worked for me. I've had this same problem with the lens and "Access" error a number of times before.
Yes, you can help along the lens by pulling it - but three taps against the palm of your hand (while the camera is on is what worked for me) had it working on its own again! Thanks!

This happened a while back while still under warranty and waited like 2 weeks to get it back fixed, with no charge.

Access error on power up, lense cycles when attempt to power off. Followed the 3 bang fixit method I found on this and other sites. Took a couple extra bangs on the countertop, but amazingly the camera woke up. Woking fine now, thanks to whomever discovered this fix.

WOW! I had the exact same problem as everyone else! There's something going on with the lens as it tries to retract. It makes a different sound than usual. The banging it on my desk thing worked, but the zooming in and out to take pictures is a little slow. I still would like it to work properly and not have to bang on it.
Unbelievable!!! Couldn't take any more pics at brother-in-laws wedding 'cause some drunken nutjob knocked the camera off the table. Thought I was in for an expensive bill. Followed the advise of smacking it around a few times, and voila!!! Took a few smacks to the side, top, and bottom to get it working but it seems fine now!!!!

I had the same problem with my DSC-W50 and smacked it on my desk 3 times and it's fixed!!! I was skeptical reading through this but thought what the heck... try it anyways and it friggen worked!
The soltion worked for me.
Wow!, it took some pretty hard bangs on my plastic storage container but it now works.

it keeps coming up with me too. sometimes if i bash it around and press all the buttons and stuff it will start working but once i turn it off it comes up again the next time i turn it on. i think there may be dust or something inside of it. cant find the reciept but i think its still under warranty. . .

my cameras a DSC-W55; the tapping isn't working for me, nor the lens twisting and I don't want to break it by playing with the lens even further. How many times do you need to tap and how hard? This is a stupid problem!! I love my camera....

Had the same problem as of yesterday. Â Chatted with Sony support online and they could not fix it. Â Asked me to send it in for repairs. Â The flat rate, assuming it qualifies for it, is $91. Â Decided to try banging it. Â Took more than three soft bangs. Â Actually a few "medium" bangs against the kitchen counter and guess what? Â Â The camera now works fine.
this is very frustrating. i had no problems up until this point (about 2 years), and now i can't wack it hard enough to make a difference... boo for me!
My lens was going in and out as well... same as the rest of you...I smacked it on a mouse pad a few times and now it worsk fine. There was some sand in the lens that was preventin git from opening.

I didn't believe the smacking would work.....but low and behold I gave it a few hard taps on the table and......whalah, working again!!!!!! Thanks for the simple fix.
