Try re-seating and cleaning, the connection between the display and the Motherboard, (Electronics cotton swab and rubbing alcohol, be sure not to leave any of the cotton fuzz on the connectors.) It will be below the keyboard. If that doesn't result in any improvement, the display will probably need replacing. You can find the complete tear-down guide here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9300/sm/index.htm

If you can see the vertical lines during POST, try to check the vertical lines in BIOS. If the vertical lines are there in BIOS, the only thing you can do is to replace your LCD screen.
Try taking out the Ram memory first one stick at a time. Sometimes when Ram goes bad or overheats, it first affects the display. If that is not the issue, here is the link to your service manual.
The pixels are shot - common for lower priced LCD monitors. Once it starts, it will continue. Theres no inexpensive fix for it - time to retire the Compaq
Try connecting an external monitor to the Dell Inspiron 9300 and see if the vertical line is also present on the monitor. If the monitor display is fine, then your laptop’s LCD display panel is defective. If the monitor also displays the vertical line, then your problem is with either the video card or motherboard located inside your laptop. Not sure if the Compaq Presario has an external monitor plug, but if it does the above procedure can be applied to that one as well. Sometimes this is a sign of the monitor ribbon disconnecting from your motherboard. If you feel confident in taking your computer apart, you can reseat the cable and see if this improves. Usually pixels die individually, lines tend to be a video card error.
