Juki dln 415-- timing fix
Needle broke, #10 sewing on light weight material. Now the feed dogs are not aligned with the needle as it drops down. The needle hits early by nearly 2mm ahead of the hole. I'm pretty handy, but haven't fixed this before.
Thanks,
Jana

Hm, could be several things. If stitches are not being formed, it could be a timing issue (the needle does not arrive at the bobbin at the correct time). Did the machine recently hit a pin or something hard? That will knock a machine out of time. There could also be a broken piece stuck that is preventing the feed dogs from operating. Thoroughly clean the machine around the bobbin area and feed dogs.
The Juki HZL F300 Exceed Sewing Machine is a classroom model and will exceed ...High speed sewing up to 900 spm, stitches per minute; Power at low speed ...
Check to be sure you have not inadvertently dropped the feed dogs on your machine. Dropped feed dogs are used for 'darning' or 'free motion quilting.' Below is info from Troubleshooting Manual:
Fabric does not feed through the machine The feed dogs are lowered. Use the feed dog position switch to raise the feed dogs. 81 The stitches are too close together. Lengthen the stitch length. 42 The wrong presser foot was used. Attach the correct presser foot. 179 The needle is bent or blunt. Replace the needle with a new one. 34 The thread is tangled. Use scissors, etc., to cut the tangled thread and remove it from the race, etc.
Things to think about are whether or not you want a walking foot machine. Then if you do, decide if you want a needle feed walking foot. (the needle moves in an ovoid fashion, to help pull the material through the feed area.
Juki is a wonderful manufacturer but there are quality machines out there that are just as nice. Check out leathermachineco.com and look at their cobra 18 or cobra 17. Call Steve and talk to him about what you are looking for. (great service)
Take out the material, take off the foot and needle. Stick your finger on the feed dogs and hand turn the hand wheel like sewing. Does the feed dog come slightly above the surface of the needle plate? If it does.... tighten the presser foot tension.
If it doesn't locate the switch that drops the feed dog. Make sure it's in up position.
If neither of those solutions work. Remove the needle plate and see if the feed dog or mechanism that runs it is broken
ordinary drop feeds are not suited for sewing leather, ideally a needle feed or machine with a walking foot mechanism is best suited.if you are stuck with this machine only, there are a couple of things which may help.on some of the juki ddls there is an adjusting screw and locknut on top and in the middle of the arm of the machine .turn needle by hand wheel to bdc and loosen this screw and turn clockwise slowley!
this will raise the presser foot very slightly,so when the feed dog is at tdc it can improve the feeding .
spear point needles are reccommended also.
one other idea, but you need a qualified mechanic to do this is to alter the feed timimg slightly on the eccentric on the top shaft.as the needle is entering the fabric, slow the timing down so the needle enters the leather just as the material starts to move.
hope this helps!
