My speakers sound flat with no highs at all

I have a pair of paradigm 9semk3 speakers that were playing okay (for being used with an underpowered stereo) the volue was turned up and they went flat. I have no buzzing, no funny sounds just a very flat, mono sounding, bassish sound. I know the tweeter on one isn't working at all but the tweeter on the other is. Both all 4 woofers seem to be responding. When the volume is cranked they move about 5/8 - 3/4 of an inch in and out like they always did, but the sound just isn't there. Just low somewhat muffled bassy sound. As I know zilch about the inner workings of speakers, I hope this is enough info. - Robar

I am trying to work out if you have damaged the speakers and amp too.
Have you tried a pair of headphones on the amp? If they sound ok then your amp is fine.
Assuming it is, then speakers have what's called crossover units in side each of them. This splits the sound into three parts. Bass, midrange, treble. The bass is handled by the woofer's, the midrange by a middle sized speaker or or it's combined with a tweeter, which of course handles the treble.
Connecting a 1.5 volt battery across any of the individual speakers will cause it to pop if working. If the speaker then is not getting sound then the crossover unit is to blame.
When you look at the crossover unit, it will have coils and capacitors (non polarised) on it. The bigger ones deal with the bass and the smaller ones treble. If you find a fault say on the crossover of the speaker, for example no treble comes out of it. Then start by replacing the capacitors. Use the same value as on the capacitor and remember they fit any way round.

SOURCE: Tweeters & Midrange Speakers

If you have a Ohm Meter, check the resistance to the speakers. If it is very high, the speakers are burned, (or the crossover is (just capacitors, and resisters...cheap)). If it is close to 4 ohms check the wiring and connectors..to and at the speakers, most likly the receiver/amp is not blown.

I have a pair of Paradigm Monitor 3 V.2 High Def speakers for my front L&R home theater system. On speaker sounds very tinny with no bottom end. On inspection neither the main or tweeter loo

A few questions to help me help you: (1) Does the woofer cone move freely when you use your hands to move it (or do you feel friction)? (2) have you tried swapping the left speaker for the right to rule out the receiver as a cause?

Why will my speaker stop playing and go into protection is there a reset bottom

The "Built-in overload-protection circuitry" is just doing its job...protecting the speaker from damage. Lets look at your system 1st. Is your power amp or powered mixer underpowered which requires you to turn the volume controls up past 1:00? Big systems play loud at moderate setting where-as small systems must be max'd out to reach those same levels. Pol-mount your speakers for better coverage as your ears are not attached to your shoes.

Can this receiver play a and b speakers at the same time? I have the b speakers hooked up to Paradigm rock speakers outside. Inside on the a speakers are 2 Paradigm L and R and one Paradigm C speaker....

You should adhere to the manufacturers limitations on the amount of ohms the unit can deal with. But if you want to run more speakers than the unit is designed for, you can couple it with an impedance matched speaker switch, which will limit the connection to the right amount for the amplifier.

Paradigm 5.1 to 7.1 system

The Dolby curcuit in the Paradigm must be Dolby 7.1 or it will simply not be able to send the extra channel signals to the speakers. In otherwords you will not get the full 7.1 sound from two speakers added to a 5.1 amp.

Paradigm monitor 9 v.5

The more power the better as far as amplifiers go, underpowering speakers causes clipping and burns up voice coils. Having a high power reserve means you have higher headroom for transients, with more power the amp will be able to handle transients better and will not be running at full output all the time in order to get desired volume levels, hence more headroom.
If you want to go with quality go with components, a seperate dedicated high quality amplifier such as a haffler, crest, etc., amps you find powering monitors in studios. It all depends what you want.

Paradigm PDR-10 Sub Box

Since this is a sub I assume the sound is not coming from the speaker but is mechanical and coming from the amp in back. The tranformer can be the problem if it has delaminated or may be loose. Try removing the amp and tightening the screws. If there are rubber grommets to isolate the tranformer don't overtighten. www.pardigm.com for contact info and parts. They are very nice. If the noise is coming from the speaker then you are still under warrantee and they will replace it free.
