Hi, my HP 722C DeskJet has quit printing the black color if I use the color draft option. It prints black if I have it in color normal and it prints black if I have the settings set to black/white draft or normal. Any suggestions. I use the draft option a lot but do need it to print the words etc in black. Thanks for any help you can give!
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the black cartridge yet? Try cleaning the electrical contacts on the cartridge and the carriage where they touch. A Q-tip/cotton bud works well, a soft, dry cloth such as T-shirt material also works well. I think it is a hardware problem - most likely in or associated with the black cartridge. Hope this helps, please ask again if you try this and get no change :)
The problem is probably not inside the cartridge itself - clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and the carriage, then check the cable that connects the carriage to the rest of the printer - the end connections can come loose at both ends. Apparently there is a different path for the electrical signal to command "draft" (also a different voltage so power supply problems are a possibility, although less likely). Replacing the cartridge will not necessarily identify or solve the problem.
It is worth a check as it is free to do so.

WORKAROUND: Select EconoFast or Draft as the print quality setting in the printer properties. This will prevent the color cartridge from being used. - Or - Try another color cartridge. The color cartridge is used to print grayscale images in Normal or Best print modes, so if one color has run out, the printout will have the wrong tint. With a full color cartridge, the colors can be properly combined to create a composite black. CAUSE: When printing with Normal or Best as the print quality setting, the HP Deskjet 710C or 720C or 722C series printer will use the color ink to improve print quality output, even when printing a grayscale image.
ok im not really sure i am following you, it is printing black but what is it not printing, black when your using the color ? its not printing the color black when using color is that right?
After talking to HP Theyve suggested its an internal problem and asked how long youve had the printer etc. Theyve also said that youll probably have to get it repaired at a shop or send it in because its probably a chip or something internally. Im not sure how long youve had it or if you have some sort of warranty, but I think its kaput. Sorry couldnt help further. Its not a cartridge problem its more of an internal problem with the actual printer and cant be really fixed without looking at it.

I think you misunderstood me. I am using the Draft quality and that's when it's not printing the black.
If I use the normal or high quality it will print the black. If I print in draft quality in the black/white setting it prints in black.
I have replaced both color and black cartridges several times and that's not the problem. If it was the cartridge it wouldn't print black when in normal or black and white.
When I am having my problem is when I am printing in the color/draft mode.
Anyone got any solutions?
printer set to color/draft = No black text or lines etc
printer set to color/normal = Black works fine
printer set to black/white /normal or draft = black works fine
Does anyone else know of a solution to this problem? The color instead of black is kind of a mustard color. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers several times. It worked fine until about a month ago.
I had stated in my second post that I had tried replacing the cartridges several times. I don't think it would be the cartridge problem when it prints the black when it is supposed to except when it's on color draft.
Not worth spending money on when they don't even know if they can fix it. Thanks
