Auto focus at full zoom not responding Nikon D80 with 18-200mm VR

Nikon D80 with 18-200mm VR lense. Everything seems to work fine but if I go to full zoom the Auto focus does nothing. I can get over this by srtarting at a zoom that does focus and gradually working my way out to full zoom. Also, at full zoom the manual focus ring turns but does nothing to the focus.
Not sure if I am doing anything wrong or I have a fault

Thanks for that. I have tried all variations of settings and also tried my lense on a friends D80. Still very unresponsive beyond 70mm. I am sending it off to Nikon today and bracing myself for the estimate.

You're not going to like this but I sent it off to Nikon and they said it was impact damage even though I know it was never bashed in the slightest. They charged me £275 to replace the barrel of the lense and then re-align it. I didn't really have a choice as it's not the sort of thing you can get fixed anywhere else.

I have the exact same problem on a used lens I just bought off eBay. What wound up happening when you sent it into Nikon?

Hi - I own this lens and it manually focuses at all focal lengths (hard to see at 18mm unless your subject is extremly close). You may need to get the lens checked. BTW - Mine was set as follows when I checked for you:

  • D80 was "on"
  • M/A
  • VR = Off
  • Normal (not Active)
Hope this helps!

Not if your other lenses work ok. I would contact the Nikon Repair Depot that cleaned it.

Manual Focus won't work

Which camera are you using? If the body has AF/MF switch, put that also to MF.If this fails to help, take out the lens and try to change it to MF.

Nikon D80 auto focus

I had the same problem but then I realized the lens was not "in" all the way.  It had not clicked into place when I changed lenses.  This might work for you....it did for me.

Nikon AF-s VR zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm

First the auto focus motor is in the body and not the lens so that will not be the problem. Unless you dropped the lens the problem is probably in the focus gear interface inside the lens ( it is stuck in the manual drive --that is why no autofocus-- and there is something preventing normal gear operation). Seems like a small problem but will require a look at the rear of the lens where the gear box is situated.
