My GPS breadcrumb trail changes position by the time i'm coming back into the boat ramp. It plots perfectly on the way out and in, but has changed once i want to follow my orginal breadcrumb trail back in.

Firstly we need to know the motor that we are talking about
next a very common problem for boaties ( besides forgetting to put the drain plugs in) is to forget to open the vent on the fuel tanks
it could be the unit or the film on the windows of your car .... most of the time it is the unit messing up i have ran into this problem a few times installing
this all depend on where an how far you want to pull the boat. Also the terrain. A lot of hills ect. I would say a small boat no bigger than 16ft. make sure the traier is balanced only load on a concrete ramp. Try not to load on to steep of a ramp. Also try avoid a lot of hills the main difference on trucks and cars among other things is the transmission and the way its geared. Some transmitions even have thier own cooling sytem due to the fact that towing anything tens to put a lot of strain all transmissions. After a while check your tran fluid to make sure it isnt burning. Pull the stick and look at it. if its not the redish color and if it smells burnt i recomend discontinuing towing. Also look into uhual they sold me a hitch for an 85 300zx was perfect. It had all the specs with it.
There is a feature in these chartplotters called "Plotter Mode" that is often misunderstood and causes the exact problem you describe.
Press menu.....chart setup.....and scroll to the bottom until you see Plotter Mode in the list of options. It should be set in the OFF position.
If you have more than one display networked onboard check the setting in each one invividually.
What Plotter Mode does is allows the chartplotter system to access range scales not supported on the chart. It is not normally used for map-based navigation but more so for chartless electronic plotting (it can display routes, waypoints and track-recorder breadcrumbs.) open-ocean cruising, or for ultra-precise GPS operations (like a precision anchor drop, finding a very specific location etc. When plotter mode is on you can zoom in to a very, very small working area. The indicator it is enable is the cross-hatch background on the screen, the lack of map information, and the NO CHART DATA watermark on the screen.
