I have been struggling with a strong mildew/mold odor whenever I shut the car door. I comes out like a plume, and makes the area by the door and front tire smell very strongly like mildew. Last night we were in Costco and happened to walk by a fertilizer/plant food display, and it smelled JUST LIKE what I smell from the car. My husband has washed down the engine, we've sprayed the air vents inside and out with Smells Be Gone, and now he's taking off the door panel. So far there is nothing in the panel that we can see. Maybe it's in the doors??? I am going crazy because the smell makes me ill, and comes and goes. HELP!!
I have the same problem in my 2011 sonata and i finally figured out where its coming from, its inside the doors! Put your window down and then smell the top of the door where the window slides down in...its so gross....its been making me sick to my stomach!
It is in your AC drain line. The drain line may become clogged or develop mildew from the condensation that develops running an AC...just like your home AC. when the fan or AC is running it will blow the smell out of the vents. You need to have the lines cleaned and flushed
Small rodents crawl up into the fender areas .i would put it on a hoist and have a really good look
