I plug camera in to usb and camera shuts off so computer does not
read as new divice. any help?
Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

I tried many ways to fix the problem. Someone suggesting unpluging it for 30 min. That didn't work. I downloaded the latest version of the camera driver. That didn't work. I downloaded the latest version of windows, and that didn't work.
I was running out of ideas. But I thought I might try restoring my computer to a prior date. This restore feature hasn't worked for me for 6 month. But, that day, luck was on my side.
Since I restored my computer to two weeks ago. My problem, is fixed!

This question comes up several times a day here in the camera section at Fixya (especially with Vista users). But please note, it's very hard to troubleshoot individual software problems online, and it likely is a software issue. But why put up with the headaches of bad software in the first place? Please don't take this as a sales pitch as it's not, but please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of an inexpensive card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue:
