The fans themselves may need to be replaced or the thermal grease on the processor may need to be reapplied. What you are describing is caused by something getting to hot and then shutting the machine down to prevent damage.
At what point does it shut down? Normally thats caused by heat and/or could be viruses. I would blow out all the ports with compressed air. Does it get into windows before it shuts down?
Sue, it's not the inverter board. People who don't really know much
about laptops will often diagnose them incorrectly, especially computer
repair shops. The problem you're experiencing is most likely related
to your motherboard. Unfortunately the most expensive part to replace on most laptops.
Your best bet is to probably just have any important files from the laptop extracted by a repair shop and then selling the computer "As-IS" on ebay. Or you could try another local repair shop to take a look at it. I wouldn't pay any money for a diagnostics since it would take most techs about 5-10 minutes to confirm what I just typed.
Go back and recheck all of the access doors. If any are not closed completely, the unit won't power up. Also check to be sure that the fan spins freely and that there is no excessive dirt in the area. There are air flow sensors also that will shut the set down.
First, have you verified that the cooling fan is working? Next, check to verify that the cooling vents are not plugged up. Also, some systems have cooling fins mounted on the CPU that get crudded up with dust. It's better to use canned air rather than a vacuum because of possible problems with static. Ron-
