I'm not clear on your description, so here goes:
If it showed the Toshiba start screen, then asked for a password, then your hard drive is password protected.
If it showed the Toshiba screen, then asked for password, and you entered it, and then it goes "insert disk", then your hard drive is passworded and wiped.
If the first thing it does is ask for a password, then the password is in the BIOS.

Have you checked to make sure that your Hard Drive is properly seated. The screws are generally located on the bottom of the laptop with an icon or a symbolic letter "HDD" "D" "S"
Often times these screws become loose and the drive does not seat well. You would have that message.
Did anything strange happen the last time it worked properly? Anything that would indicate that it is a software issue? PC slowed down, Pop ups while not in a browser?
