Hi,
There is an recall from Toshiba for "bad" problem in Toshiba SD-3980 dvd player.

"Toshiba is committed to customer service and to continuously improving the quality of its products. It has come to our attention that certain DVD players bearing the model numbers SD-3980 and SD-K750 may at some point in their life stop playing discs due to a component part failure. In such case, the error message "bad" will be shown on the unit's display. Affected units will have "SU2" at the end of the model name (e.g., SD-3980-SU2), which can be found on the back of the unit. If you own either of these models and experience the issue described above, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at 1-800-631-3811 for information on how to obtain a replacement unit."

Click Toshiba Support link for original message, please contact Toshiba and above number for replacement unit.
Hope these info will help you.
Thanks.

I just got a toshiba theaterview sd dolby digital

That particular TV has both "component video" and standard video inputs. The DVD player might have a component video output (it will be three separate connectors of three different colors.) You will need a component video patch cable available at most electronics stores. If your DVD player doesn't have that input then use the standard video connector, yellow wire connects the video out on the DVD player to the Video input on the TV. The red and white wires are the left and right stereo audio connections they also make a cable for that. It will be color coded so make sure you match the codes from the output to the input on the TV. This set has two video inputs, you will get your best resolution if you use them instead of a "channel" input.

You will need the remote to select the video 1 or video 2 inputs. You can connect your DVD player and your game at the same time. Just use video 1 for the DVD and video 2 for the game. They require the yellow, red and white connector cables. Just follow the color code and match the colors with the jacks on the TV and other units. There is actually a third video input Video 3 behind the little door on the front panel. That would be convenient for the game if you want to remove it easily when not in use.

Push the menu button on the remote (big button in the middle) go to the video function and select either Video 1 for your DVD, Video 2 or 3 for your game.

The correct video input for what you want to view is important. Also if you don't have the user's manual it's available for free here: http://tacpservice.toshiba.com/ConsumerProductSupport/Manuals/TV/2003/32A33_32_36A43%28E%29_A.pdf

You might also need to download an Adobe Viewer which allows you to read .pdf files.
That is also available for free at:
http://get.adobe.com/reader/

If you already have malware protection (viruses and the like) un-check the MacAfee box so you don't download that too.

Hello, The problem could be dirt on the surface of the lens, you can clean this by removing the cover of the dvd player . Gently use a dry cotton bud to clean the lens because the lens is fragile. Insert the disc plate into the dvd player and press play, if it does not play try the second method. Ensure the cover of the player is open, connect the power plug to the mains socket and observe the lens if it beam a red light, Also check the ribbon cable use to connect the lens to the printed circuit board, then gently clean the lens with a dry cotton bud , insert the disc plate and press play to see if it play. If it does not play the disc, then this require a change of the lens

Check the line carrying your video signal. See if it is damaged or not hooked up properly. It is usually the yellow wire, although it can be any number of colors.

I've had the same symptoms on the last two Sony DVD's that I've rented. I managed to get around this by hitting one of the menu buttons after the loading message stopped.
