I have a zanussi machine not sure of the model but it's only 1 year old. recently when i turn it on for the first 5 minutes there is a terrible egg smell which then goes after 5 minutes. It does not effect the clothes though.
The full details regarding the drain hose issue (including a picture) can be found here http://www.washerhelp.co.uk/diy-repair-safety_2.html#cl_q2 There's a full article on possible causes of washing machine smells here too

If you are running on eco levels, a build up of bacteria can occur. Suggest the occasional (monthly) empty wash, with soap, at the top temperature and cotton wash. This kills the bulk of the bacteria and the worst of the smells.
Make sure that the drain hose is connected correctly, and that there isn't a direct run down from the sink u-bend to the washing machine. This can allow some of the dirty water running down the sink to run down the drain hose into the washing machine. A drain hose that is connected to a sink u-bend should first go up at least 3 or 4 inches high (it may need tying up) before running down to the washing machine. Good luck!
