Hey all, Having an ongoing issue with DSL line at home. I have Verizon DSL service with a Westell modem, and when DSL modem is connected directly to PC or to my laptop connection is always fien with no interuptions. However, when I try to install the WRT54GS router into the mix so I can use my laptop wirelessly with my house I lose internet connection on both computers intermititantly. Not sure what is happening as I've upgraded firmware on router, even read HOURS of tech support on the Linksys site to no prevail. Just a rundown on my setup:
-DSL line into house-Connected to Westell Modem -USB connected from internet port in Modem to router internet port -Desktop PC connect through USB to Port 1 on router (have tried all four just to trouble shoot) -Wireless Client on Router set up for my Laptop with encryption
What I dont get is Ive followed all directions on plug this forst, this last, etc.. from support sites and every once in a while completely lose connection to Internet when using router. Any Ideas?
I am running Windows Vista on My laptop and Win XP SP2 on desktop. I have to check the configuration on the wireless specs as I have it disconnected right now and am running directly through teh Westell on my Laptop.
Im going to try and do some re-configing and Ill post back...Thx for everything so far!

Funny question, but where exactly is your router located? What kind of obstructions are around it? Also, check to make sure your modem does not have wireless capabilities as this could cause an interference. Sounds to me like a weak signal.Funny question, but where exactly is your router located? try it on a different channel and also can you do a step by step of what you have configured / done.
Also what encryption type are you using and the laptop you are using wirelessly is this windows xp with sp 1 ? If so then you need at least SP2 for WPA - PSK to work correctly.

Try to change the LAN IP address of your router to 192.168.2.1 by accessing the router's Setup page. You also need to set your Westell modem to "full-bridge mode". You need to ask assistance from your ISP to bridge the modem. After that, set-up the Linksys router to PPPoE then power cycle it.

whenever the connection drops, is the DSL light blinking? because, it is just normal for the E1 light to blink, but the DSL light should be solid at all times.
It can be a possible issue with the cable or the LAN card, but you still need to have your line checked by Verizon to make sure that it is not a modem or a network issue.
Your problem definitely sounds like an intermittent connection problem. It can either be one of two things. #1. You have a defective modem, or #2 It's a network problem. I will definitely go with #2. Here's the thing. The problem you have is very very very common not only to Verizon DSL customers, but also to other Internet Service Providers as well. The best way to fix the problem is to understand what's causing the problem. There are two types of intermittent connection problems. The first is Intermittent Sync. You'll know if you have this problem because the DSL light will be blinking everytime you get kicked out. That means there's no internet connection, The modem cannot detect and establish a connection with the Central Office. The second is Intermittent route (which I know is you're problem), The DSL light is steady, but the Internet light almost always turns OFF or turns RED. The only way to fix this problem is to coordinate with Verizon. The reason is because the problem is outside your house. The long cable lines, the drop wire, the cables that passes through from the Central Office to your House can all be damaged, If that's the case, then a technician is required to go out and fix the problem. Don't worry about calling Verizon, this is a network problem and you won't be charge for anything. I know losing internet connection is very frustrating. Give your ISP a chance, they will definitely fix the problem if you give them the opportunity to do so.
i worked for verizon for two years and I encounter this problem many times,to tell you honestly, its not with you internet connection since if you'll notice, while you are connected to the internet and you make a call or call someone, its interrupted... Obviously, its the phone itslelf, the signal comng from the phone is different from the signal of the internet...thats the reason why you need a modem to convert the signal coming from the phone line to make it work for internet,,,what I suggest is you change the DSL plan from the Dry Loop to the regular dsl with the phone...
You have options definitely. You can get it through verizon, they'll ship it to you free of charge. You can also buy it at any local store near you. If you're going with the second option, just make sure you're getting either an Actiontec or Westell brand, because those are the only modem that Verizon supports, even if you buy it outside. Since you're going to upgrade your modem, I suggest getting a Westell 7500 or an Actiontec GT704, both are wireless capable already. If you use XBOX 360, I suggest getting Westell 327 or Actiontec GT701 or GT704.
the wireless won't work. i have the same problem. westell modems aren't compatible with wireless function on some laptops therefore routing signal through a wireless router allows that. it can be done, i've done it but after modem was reset having issues. keep searching it can be done...
thanks for the vague and non-informative answer though whoever that was.
