Have same issue with 3 year old Frigidaire dehumidifier purchased in 2012. Must unplug to stop compressor running with power switch turned off. Unit gets hot and smells. Unplugging creates arcs at outlet since unit is pulling a lot of power. Plugging back in after some hours will make it appear to run normally and again remove moisture but it will not shut off when the fan goes off (humidistat bad?) and the set-point is reached. Cannot leave plugged in due to safetty/fire/overheating concern. Have not found answer on this forum or any other so far.
Brisy, you have an electrical problem within the unit, which may require the help of Whirlpool Technical Service to solve. That is, unless you have a multimeter and want to dismantle the unit to find the electrical problem. Could simply be a shorted wire or something more serious, which could require replacement parts. Also, consider the age of the unit and would it be cost effective to repair it, as opposed to replacing it. Quite honestly, repairs, sometimes can cost almost as much as a new unit.
It is probably the start device(the coil looking things), as long as you don't hear the compressor humming. A loud hum is a lock compressor and the cost would be far greater than a new unit.
mcdevito75 here, Sounds like the bearing in the fan motor is frozen, need a new unit or fan motor. Check your area or online for any appliance repair shop for help.
Your fan motor is going out. You can remove the screws from the back cover and gently pry it off. After that, look into the unit and you will see the screws holding the front cover. Take the bucket out and remove the screws at the top. All the screws around the entire metal shroud need to come out. Then with the covers off you can see the fan mount screws. You have to move the evaporator very gently out of the way to get to these screws. Remove the fan motor replace it and re assemble the unit.
Could be a failed compressor start relay. They are replaceable. Get one at an appliance parts store for your model or a generic one. Make sure you are unplugged before changing.
Sounds like the unit needs re-gassing and checking for leaks. It is not unusual for a 3-year old unit to require this - especially dehumidifiers as they are often not used all year round, and the seals that stop the gas from leaking are prone to settling and drying out when not in use.
This is not a procedure that you are permitted to carry out yourself, just call a local HVAC/Fridge repairer and see what they quote - the job itself is simple enough depending on the leaks and if anything needs replacing, but the gas itself is getting costly. Make sure they do a leak test first.
If not topped up with gas then don't run the compressor - the lubricant that protects the compressor is mixed in with the refrigerant gas and will dry out quickly if the gas has leaked.
Hope this helps - please ask for more info if you need it :)
