i think you should change the battery, my coolpix 4300 had the same problem as yours, and after i replace the battery with the new one, the indicator never showed again

The rechargeable battery probably needs to be replaced, I would take it to a camera shop let him have a quick look to make sure the charge light is coming on and try a new battery.

Nikon cameras say battery exhausted when they need new batteries, just swap out the old ones and it should be good to go.

It's the way that the camera reads the "energy left" that is the problem. Not all AA batteries are the same. Basically the default setting is (at least in the UK and US versions) set to ALKALINE AA batteries. If you are getting the "battery exhausted" message after putting new AAs in, chances are your batteries are not ALKALINE. You can either buy some new AA Alkaline specific batteries (eg: Duracell make them and they say specifically alkaline on the side). Or you can try to keep power on long enough to press MENU, then go to the "spanner" tab, then select "Battery Type", and select either Lithium AA if that is what you are using, or NI-MH versions. Stupide Canon don't tell you this anywhere, and I have already chucked one of their products because of it, when actually it was fine. (Jake, Newcastle, United Kingdom, December 2012).
