Craftsman opener motor works, but chain does not move.

Craftsman opener quit operating the door. The motor works but the chain does not move and open/close the door. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

The door will open manually, so I beleive the springs are not broken, but I will double check. The sprocket situation sounds like a more likely possibility. I will check on that when I return home from work. Thank both of you for the possibilities.

The horizontal ring gear has lost all of its teeth. They were apparently ground off when door stopped opening.

If the motor is working but the chain does not move you must remove the cover on the motor and check to see that the chain is on the sprocket. If the chain is on the sprocket and the sprocket is not moving but the motor shaft is moving then the sprocket must be retightened onto the motor shaft.

All garage door openers have a quick release. Have you checked to make sure that is locked in place? Most have a cord hangin from it and you pull it which releases it from the chain. Make sure that is engaged and it should work.

Motor hums but door doesn't move. If I disconnect door and give chain a horizontal poke, it will move. When I reconnect door it returns to humming, without movement.

Remove the cover from the motor unit and you will find the drive gear has stripped. White sawdust all over. The part number for the gear kit is 41A2817 and it comes with instructions. It is available at any good door opener service company.

Loosen the chain enough that you can remove it from the pulley on top of the motor unit. Now with the door closed run the motor until the pulley turns in the clockwise direction and stops. Put the chain back on the pulley and tighten. You may have to tweak the up and down limits now.

Sears/Craftsman Garage Door won't budge

with the door down, disconnect with the emergency release, see if the motor operates
with no load...if the the track moves you probably have something obstructing the door
ie; a broken spring, door locks, etc ... the chain should be adjusted for just a little
**** mid way down the rail (1/4") if it still doesn't move ... call sears.

Craftsman 1\2 hp clicks, motor wurrs for 1 sec', but doesn't open

You have a stripped gear on the opener. Take off the cover on the motor. The bottom of the cover will be filled with white shavings. You can repair this with a "liftmaster gear and sprocket assembly".

My door comes down part way and the motor keeps running.

Sounds like the gears might be out of the operator. If you can remove the cover see if there are white shavings in the cover. A Craftsman operator will take gear kit # 41C4220A

Everything is moving but the door isn't opening

your gears are probablly shreaded. the good news is that your motor isnt dead. you will probabllly need new gears depending upon which ones were shreaded. seeing plastic shavings and or plastic pieces inside unit is an indication of that

Craftsman Garage Door Opener Won't Open

When mine did this, it was because the nylon gears that drive the chain had stripped. My wife had to live without the opener for a week or more, but I was able to find a new gear kit online and replace the damaged gears. It wasn't difficult.
The other option is to buy a new opener.
