In this article we will will outline some of the most common projection TV problems, fixes, pros and cons, and average lifespan.
Average Lifespan: 7-20 YearsPros: Large screen size and excellent picture quality. Some model support HD. Very reliable when they are cared for.
Cons: Heavier and bulkier than the newer plasma or LCD sets so if you live in a cardboard box it may take up a bit more room.
Common Problems/Fixes
Common Problem #1 - Convergence: One the most common problems that you will run into eventually is a convergence failure. This is when the TV colors do not align anymore and the TV will look 3D, warped or distorted. This is a very common problem and a fairly simple DIY fix. Parts to repair this can be found over the internet from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com . Below are a few photos of a typical convergence problem and a link to a video on YouTube with more details.

Notice how the image looks 3D...this is a classic example of a convergence failure...it may also look warped or have a wave look. But the wave will not fluctuate.
Common Problem #2 - Dull or Dark Video
The second most common problem we see on projection TV sets is whats known as the dull video issue. This is commonly caused by discolored cooling fluid in the lenses. Over many years - usually around 5-7 years - the fluid will discolor and cause the video to wash out or look dull. Changing the CRT fluid out every 7-10 years will restore the image clarity back to factory new conditions. You will actually be amazed at how sharp and clear the video looks once a fluid repair has been done.
Here is a before and after photo notice how it looks washed out. In some cases the images will look like they have halos around them or the screen will have a reddish tint. Bottom line - if your projection TV has never had the lens fluid replaced the video is not as sharp as it can be. You can get fluid kits from the same sites mentioned above. Doing this repair yourself or through a shop will make the video look amazing.

Common Problem #3 - Dead set with no videoIn these cases there can be more than one common issue depending on the TV brand and model. But to make things simple if the TV has no audio or video and its making a constant chirping sound the issue is caused by a short in the convergence. The fix is to do a convergence repair. If however its not chirping constantly it can be one of many issue from failed capacitors, diodes, flybacks, etc.
