Have you made a hardware change recently? I added a memory module and my Dell PC (Windows came pre-installed) showed the same message. I had a fight with Microsoft service desk for the problem, finally they provided me with another serial number and activated (again) my Windows installation. And NO, you don't have to pay anything.

Welcome to FixYa!

If you're seeing notifications that the copy of Windows that is installed on your PC might not be genuine, or that you might be a victim of counterfeit software, it's likely that your copy of Windows was not properly activated or is otherwise not genuine. To fix this, click the notification and follow the steps to either repair Windows or-if you have inadvertently obtained counterfeit software-buy genuine Windows.

If you are using Windows XP, download and install the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification Application. It will scan your operating system and will remove the annoying message if it's a legitimate copy of windows.

Hi

If you install copy of WIndows XP operating system, do not update it or get update it through internet as it will detect that you are using counterfeiting or pirated software. Just reinstall again the operating system and this time do not get update from internet when installing. Ever it pop up to your computer, just ignore it. Otherwise, that will appear.

Good Luck.

So you have installed windoes and input your COA sticker from Microsoft? If this is true then you can call them to get it validated. The number I found for you is (888) 352-7140. Resolved.
