SOURCE: Printer problem
Mine does the same thing, it appears to be a scanner sensor that has failed. The machine starts by lighting up the scanner, then moving out of park position, then repeatedly trying to move it back into the parked position. It appears to be a sensor that is not working, and needs a part replacement.
SOURCE: on startup printer growls
Hi Charlie, These machines have a history of growling, however usually they growl before changing the fuser. The fuser is most likely the problem maybe you got a bad one. If you still have the old one and it was quiet you could pop it back in to confirm. Ther is also a gear kit available to replace the fuser drive gears but usually the noise is in the fuser.
Another growling noise can come from optional tray3 if installed. Easy to diagnose just lift machine off the assm. and print.
Hope this helps

Hi,
Try the steps given in the below document.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c00587637
Also try the following resets and check
Perform a partial reset
A partial reset will return user settings to factory defaults. On some models, language and country/region settings are also reset. Perform a partial reset of the product by following the instructions below.
* Unplug the power cord from the unit.
* Reconnect the power cord into the unit.
* When the lights begin to flash, press and hold the On/Resume and Paper Size buttons.
* When only the On/Resume light is flashing, release the buttons.
* When the On/Resume light is steady, the reset is complete.

SOURCE: HP Officejet 6210 will print but with terrible clicking noise
Ok this Sounds Crazy but it worked for me and its easy to try. Unplug the unit and pick it up and turn it side ways and gently shake it. Sometimes a small piece of plastic has broken loose and is interfering with the works and if you can dislodge it from its current location it will stop. Be careful not to hurt youself doing it. Also, I have one printer with a missing tooth on one of the gears and has been growling at me for a long time.
Best of Luck,

SOURCE: loud clicking noise on startup
Had the same problem with machine gun noises. Solved same. Simply turn printer off. Open door. With a flashlite, look inside to the right side where you'll see a small tray that slides forward and backwards. This is the cartridge cleaner. Push the tray forward (away from you) until it stops then move it backwards until the little black tab on the right is 1/2 inch from the metal part of the carriage. Close the door. Turn printer on. All done. Print something.
